Saint Raphael the Archangel Feast and Fair

A festival of faith and tradition in the heart of Salento

The Saint Raphael the Archangel Feast and Fair is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Trepuzzi, a town in the province of Lecce in the heart of Puglia. Saint Raphael, the healing archangel and protector of travelers, is venerated here as co-patron and traditionally celebrated on the fourth Sunday of October, when the entire community gathers for the festivities.

Religious celebrations

The sacred heart of the festival is the Mother Church of Trepuzzi, where the three-day preparation period (triduum) takes place with the rosary, morning lauds, and vespers. The core of the devotion is the solemn procession that winds through the city streets, accompanied by the faithful and the local band. On Sunday, masses are held throughout the morning, culminating in the afternoon concelebrated Eucharist presided over by delegates from the Archdiocese of Lecce.

The ancient market fair

Beyond its religious significance, the festival owes much of its fame to the fair, considered one of the most extensive in Southern Italy. Hundreds of vendors from all over Italy line the city center streets and the main state road, offering textiles, terracotta, sweets, handicrafts, and all kinds of goods. Completing the experience is the evocative Ancient Livestock Fair, set up near the industrial and craft zone (Via Surbo), which recalls the ancient rural vocation of the Salento territory with animals, tools, and traditional farming crafts.

The civil celebration

The civil program is coordinated by the Patronal Feast Committee in collaboration with the municipal administration. Among the traditional rites, the evocative floral tribute to the Marian column dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption in Largo Margherita stands out, with flowers laid at noon. In the evening, Largo Comizi and the central squares come alive with musical performances, festive lights, and entertainment for all ages, creating a celebratory atmosphere that unites generations.

A defining event for Trepuzzi

For the community of Trepuzzi and the entire Lecce province, the Feast of Saint Raphael the Archangel represents much more than a religious anniversary: it is a collective ritual that marks the Salento autumn, a time for families to reunite, merchants to meet, and for the rediscovery of rural roots. Visitors to Puglia in October will find here an authentic slice of popular tradition, where the sacred and the profane have coexisted for centuries.
