A theatrical re-enactment of the days preceding the December 1943 battle, held within the Parco della Memoria Storica
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Le Strade della Memoria is a historical re-enactment dedicated to the Battle of San Pietro Infine, one of the most brutal episodes of the Italian Campaign during World War II. Between December 8 and 17, 1943, this small town in the Alto Casertano region, located on the border between Campania, Lazio, and Molise, was the first stronghold of the Gustav Line to fall to the Allied offensive; by the end of the fighting, almost nothing remained of the village. The event was created not just to recount the battle itself, but to capture the days that preceded it, when the inhabitants still lived among the houses, shops, and churches of the ancient village.
The re-enactment takes place within the Parco della Memoria Storica, an open-air museum formed by the ruins of the old town, which has been a national monument since 2008. Visitors are guided in groups of approximately forty people along a route winding through alleys, arches, and crumbling walls: at each stop, they encounter an actor portraying a 1943 resident of San Pietro Infine—the parish priest, women hiding in the valley caves, farmers, and local youth. Ten performers give voice to the hopes and shattered dreams of an entire community, in a narrative that is not a military reconstruction, but a restoration of daily life on the eve of catastrophe.
The project includes a permanent exhibition housed in the town's former nursery school, curated by Pino Angelone: testimonies, period photographs, films, and artifacts tell the story of the village before its destruction and the days of the conflict. A dedicated space features the documentary filmed on-site by American director John Huston, The Battle of San Pietro, one of the most famous visual records of the war in Italy and a key reason why this village of a few hundred inhabitants is known even overseas.
The format chosen by the organizers pairs the theatre with a concluding musical moment in Piazza San Nicola, located in the new town rebuilt in the valley after the war. In the first edition, the final performance was entrusted to the Neapolitan tenor Francesco Malapena, accompanied by Felice Tenneriello and pianist Giancarlo Vorzitelli: a closing act intended to give the two-day event a solemn rather than festive tone, consistent with the commemorative nature of the initiative.
The project is promoted by the Municipality of San Pietro Infine, in the province of Caserta (Campania), with Mayor Antonio Vacca, in collaboration with the company Summa srl and under the artistic direction of Lino D'Angiò. The stated goal is to restore vitality to the Parco della Memoria Storica, transforming it from a place of ruins into a living space for storytelling, education, and conscious cultural tourism. It is an institutional investment that fits into the broader Gustav Line memory circuit, which continues from the Alto Casertano towards Mignano Monte Lungo and Cassino.
The first edition was held on April 26 and 27, 2025, preceded by the inauguration of the exhibition on April 18. The event is therefore scheduled for spring, during the period that in Italy coincides with the Liberation Day celebrations: a choice that links local memory to the national anniversary of April 25. The dates for the next edition have not yet been announced; it is advisable to follow the channels of the Municipality and the Parco della Memoria Storica for updates.
At the moment, there are no announcements from the Municipality of San Pietro Infine, the company Summa srl, or the artistic direction regarding the 2026 edition of Le Strade della Memoria. The event was born in 2025 as the first edition of a project to enhance the Parco della Memoria Storica: the annual recurrence is not yet formally declared, although the institutional investment and the positive feedback received suggest a return of the initiative.
Those wishing to participate can monitor the Municipality's website and the channels of the Museum and Parco della Memoria Storica, or write to [email protected], the address used in the first edition for guided tour bookings. As soon as official dates and programs are released, this page will be updated.
San Pietro Infine can be reached from the A1 Rome-Naples motorway by taking the San Vittore del Lazio exit and continuing towards Venafro-Isernia. The nearest train station is Mignano Monte Lungo, on the Rome-Cassino-Naples line; the reference airport is Naples Capodichino.
The entrance is at Viale degli Eroi 2. During the summer, the park is open to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM and from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM. For information, call +39 334 2219289. Inside the park, QR codes placed along the route provide access to documents, period photographs, and audio narrations.
During the re-enactment, groups are limited to forty people: it is advisable to book in advance by writing to [email protected].
The route takes place outdoors on uneven ground among the ruins: comfortable, closed-toe shoes are required. Bring water and, on sunny days, a hat. The visit may be challenging for those with limited mobility.
