The May Day fair featuring Freisa wine, vintage tractors, and the flavors of the Asti Monferrato
For years, May 1st in Buttigliera d'Asti, in the province of Asti, has been synonymous with Le Contrade del Freisa: a fair that weaves together tradition, gastronomy, and culture to celebrate the excellence of the Piedmont region. Organized by the Municipality of Buttigliera d'Asti in collaboration with the Pro Loco, the event brings the streets and squares of the historic center to life for an entire day, turning them into a journey of flavors, craftsmanship, and conviviality.
The fair's name is a tribute to Freisa, the lively and bold grape variety and wine typical of the Asti and Monferrato hills. The Pro Loco food and wine stand is the delicious heart of the event, where you can taste Freisa paired with traditional local dishes in an authentic village festival atmosphere.
Among the most beloved attractions is the vintage tractor rally, which draws enthusiasts and curious onlookers to see the agricultural machinery that shaped the history of the Piedmontese countryside. The antique and craft markets wind through the districts, accompanied by exhibitions and displays. The soundtrack is provided by roaming folk music that travels through the village streets, while scenic walks through the vineyards are also available.
To complete the day, the social promotion association Camminare lentamente, in partnership with the Pro Loco, offers the "Cammino DiVino" walk: a loop of approximately 7 km along trails, dirt roads, and short inclines, including a wine tasting at the Cantina Sociale Terre dei Santi in Castelnuovo Don Bosco. It is a slow and convivial way to discover the hilly landscape that frames the fair.
"Le Contrade del Freisa" is much more than just a food festival: it is the moment when Buttigliera d'Asti tells its own storyโits wine, its agricultural heritage, and its spirit of community. An event rooted in the tradition of rural Piedmont, perfect for those who want to experience May Day with a glass of Freisa, the aromas of local cuisine, and the charm of the Asti hills.
