The Frentano Carnival featuring masks, confetti, and fireworks at Parco delle Rose
Every year, between February and Shrove Tuesday, the Municipality of Lanciano, an important center in the province of Chieti in Abruzzo, comes alive with Carnival festivities. The Frentano city offers two distinct yet complementary moments: the neighborhood festival of the "Grosso Grasso Carnevale" in Santa Rita and the grand city event in the heart of the historic center, in Piazza Plebiscito.
Born as a neighborhood festival, the "Grosso Grasso Carnevale" takes place in Piazza Giovanni Paolo II, in the Santa Rita district, and is dedicated to families, children, and anyone wishing to experience a day of joy and tradition. The event is organized by the Omnis Terra association together with the Spirito Santo Parish, with the support of the Municipality of Lanciano.
The afternoon kicks off with entertainment for the little ones, including bubble shows, cotton candy, and baby dance sessions hosted by the Praticabile Cooperative. The highlight is the mask parade, where adults and children show off their costumes in a riot of confetti and colors, followed by the "Carnival blast," a fireworks display by Pirotecnica Lanci. There is no shortage of food stalls offering local delicacies, popcorn, small donuts, chickpeas, mulled wine, and hot chocolate.
The grand finale of the Lanciano Carnival takes place on Shrove Tuesday in Piazza Plebiscito, the city's beating heart. In the afternoon, the square fills with music and entertainment from the Winter Carnival Band, while at the end of the day, the traditional fireworks display illuminates the sky over Parco delle Rose (Villa delle Rose), one of the most anticipated moments for the people of Lanciano.
For safety reasons, access to Parco delle Rose during the fireworks display is limited, with numbered tickets distributed by the Civil Protection. The event is free to attend, though traffic changes in the historic center are expected during the event hours.
The Lanciano Carnival represents a deeply felt appointment in city life, capable of involving neighborhoods and associations in a shared festive atmosphere. Between masks, papier-mรขchรฉ, music, and fireworks, the event renews the popular and convivial spirit of the Abruzzese Carnival every year, offering residents and visitors an opportunity to discover the hospitality and traditions of this historic city of Frentania.
