Three evenings of film and philosophical reflection at the Auditorium Sirena in Francavilla al Mare
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Lampi d'Agosto – Cinema and Philosophy is an annual summer event held every August in Francavilla al Mare, in the province of Chieti, the heart of the Trabocchi Coast in Abruzzo. For three consecutive evenings, the Auditorium Sirena becomes a meeting place where the big screen meets philosophical inquiry: it is not just a simple screening, but a journey where moving images engage with the great questions of human thought.
The heart of the festival is Professor Umberto Curi, one of Italy's most renowned philosophers and professor emeritus of History of Philosophy at the University of Padua, as well as an honorary citizen of Francavilla al Mare. Curi introduces and comments on each film, guiding the audience to discover the deep connections between cinematic narratives and the great existential questions. Each edition is dedicated to a specific theme, author, or philosophical issue, addressed with rigorous argumentation and a critical spirit.
The festival was born from the Filosofia al Mare cultural project, an association that curates and organizes it in collaboration with the Municipality of Francavilla al Mare. The initiative aims to offer authentic philosophy—rooted in rational argumentation and dialectical thought—as an antidote to the superficiality of contemporary communication. Lampi d'Agosto is part of the broader municipal summer calendar, which enlivens the Adriatic town every year with cinema, music, festivals, and meetings.
The most recent edition chose the question «What is time?» as its common thread, explored through films that challenge our perception, repetition, and memory. Over the years, the festival has featured retrospectives and in-depth analyses dedicated to great cinema authors, from Orson Welles to Martin Scorsese, and from Woody Allen to Christopher Nolan, always under the philosophical guidance of Umberto Curi.
Screenings take place in the evening, outdoors, with free admission until seats are filled, representing one of the most anticipated cultural moments of the Francavilla summer. The setting of the Auditorium Sirena, just a few steps from the sea, adds charm to an event that combines summer leisure with cultural growth, attracting cinema enthusiasts and curious minds from all over Abruzzo.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the festival is included in the municipal summer program, but the precise calendar and screening schedule will be communicated by the Filosofia al Mare association and the Municipality of Francavilla al Mare in the weeks leading up to the event.
