Summer fishing competitions at the Bior pond in Molveno, in the Brenta Dolomites
In the heart of summer, the small Lago di Bior — an alpine pond located just above the village of Molveno, in the Autonomous Province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige) — becomes a meeting point for sport fishing enthusiasts. Here, the Molveno Sport Fishing Association has been organizing a series of competitions for decades that mark the summer season, attracting local anglers, vacationers, and curious onlookers.
The association, founded in 1967 by local fishermen, manages the waters of Lake Molveno, the Bior pond, and the Lambin and Massò streams. Throughout the summer, five competitions are organized at the Bior pond, a tradition that continues to this day. To ensure participants have a great time, the pond is regularly stocked with trout during July and August, totaling about 60 kg per month.
The competitions are open to everyone, even those without a fishing license, upon payment of the registration fee. On the day of the event, participants collect their station number, drawn by lot along the banks of the pond, and compete with their rods to catch the most trout. The atmosphere is the convivial and informal one typical of village events, with families and enthusiasts gathered on the green shores.
Making the event even more enticing are the prizes, including baskets of local Trentino products for the winners. But the real added value is the setting: the Bior pond is in a privileged position within the Molveno area, famous for its large swimmable lake and its proximity to the Brenta Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Participating in a competition here means combining the sport of fishing with a day outdoors in one of the most picturesque corners of Trentino.
The municipality of Molveno is one of the most beloved tourist destinations in Trentino, overlooking the lake of the same name — repeatedly awarded as one of the most beautiful in Italy — and surrounded by the imposing peaks of the Brenta range. The fishing competitions at the Bior pond are part of a rich calendar of summer events that enliven the village, offering residents and guests an authentic way to experience the tradition and nature of this alpine territory.
The Molveno event calendar confirms a fishing competition at the Bior pond for July 12, 2026, with participants meeting in the early hours of the morning. This is the first of five summer events that the Molveno Sport Fishing Association dedicates to sport trout fishing between July and August.
As every year, participation is open to all upon registration, with no license required. The pond is stocked with trout to ensure the enjoyment of the competitors, and winners are awarded prizes including baskets of typical Trentino products.
Molveno can be reached by car via the SS421, exiting the A22 Brenner motorway at the San Michele all'Adige/Mezzocorona or Trento toll booths. The Bior pond is located just above the village. The nearest train station is in Trento, which is connected to Molveno by local buses.
Registration can be completed at the Molveno Sport Fishing Association office or at the Molveno Tourist Office (Piazza Marconi). The competition card is collected on the day of the event. Contact: tel. +39 0461 586924, email [email protected].
The competitions take place early in the morning: it is recommended to arrive in advance. Molveno has numerous accommodation facilities, ideal for a summer stay at the gateway to the Brenta Dolomites.
