The Elba Island time trial from Marciana Marina to Monte Perone
The Tagliagambe is one of the most beloved tests for climbing enthusiasts on Elba Island: a time trial that starts from the seafront of Marciana Marina, in the province of Livorno, and climbs up to Monte Perone, in the heart of the Tuscan archipelago. The name itself—playful yet merciless—says it all: it is 9 kilometers of pure ascent, with 600 meters of positive elevation gain and gradients reaching 14%, a course that tests the legs and character of anyone who faces it.
Born in 2005 from a bet between friends, the Tagliagambe has grown into a must-attend event for athletes and cycling enthusiasts from all over Italy and Europe. It is a non-competitive event open to all: the climb can be tackled by bicycle, mountain bike, pedal-assisted e-bike, or on foot, with runners sharing the same route as the cyclists. The minimum age for participation is 16, and helmets are mandatory for those on bikes.
The June 20, 2026 edition marks the return of the Tagliagambe after the last race held in 2019: a seven-year wait that has fueled the enthusiasm of the Elban community and sports fans alike. The event is organized by A.S.D. Marciana Marina, which has enriched the day with a program of side events designed to involve families, curious visitors, and nature lovers, not just athletes.
The 2026 edition introduces the Marco Pantani Mountain Grand Prix, a tribute to the champion who, during the 1993 Giro d'Italia, crossed Elba, climbing from Marciana Marina towards Poggio and Monte Perone. A climb that cyclists call "the gates of Hell" due to its difficulty, it becomes an opportunity to celebrate the spirit of those who face the mountain one pedal stroke at a time.
The Tagliagambe is more than just sport. The afternoon on Monte Perone features a guided trek to the Mine with CAI Elba, games and activities for children, photography exhibitions dedicated to the island's history, songs by the Elban choir Koralè, and tastings of traditional flavors, from Birra dell'Elba to local products offered by the Procchio Pro Loco. A celebration of sport, nature, and culture that captures the most authentic soul of the Municipality of Marciana Marina and the entire Tuscan archipelago.
The 2026 edition of the Tagliagambe takes place on Saturday, June 20, starting from Marciana Marina and finishing at Monte Perone, along the 9 km climb with 600 meters of elevation gain and gradients up to 14%. The novelty of the year is the Marco Pantani Mountain Grand Prix, dedicated to the memory of the champion who tackled this same climb in 1993 during the Giro d'Italia. The day, organized by A.S.D. Marciana Marina, combines the sporting event with a rich program of side events on Monte Perone.
The program begins in the early afternoon on Monte Perone with activities for everyone, before the evening start of the time trial.
Tastings are curated in collaboration with Birra dell'Elba and the Procchio Pro Loco. A shuttle service is provided for the return to the valley.
Marciana Marina can be reached by ferry from Piombino to Portoferraio (Toremar and Moby/Blu Navy connections) and then by car heading west along the island's north coast. The start is set in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.
Registration costs 18 euros. Online registration is open on the website www.tagliagambe.net until Thursday, June 18; on the day of the race, it is possible to register from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM at the Ristorante Cothù, in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele in Marciana Marina. A shuttle service is available for the return to the valley.
Helmets are mandatory for cyclists; minimum age is 16. We recommend appropriate clothing for the climb and a water bottle: the route is demanding and almost entirely uphill.
