Children's and youth theatre festival at the Castello Ducale in Torremaggiore
La Scena dei Ragazzi is a theatre festival for children and youth held in Torremaggiore, a town in the Alto Tavoliere area of the province of Foggia, in Puglia. Part of the regional circuit promoted by Puglia Culture and supported by the Municipality of Torremaggiore and its Cultural Office, the festival brings stories, fairy tales, and narratives specifically designed for children and new generations to the stage.
The programme is divided into two complementary tracks: Sunday performances, scheduled for the late afternoon and open to families, and school matinées, which welcome local school classes on weekday mornings. Each production features companies from across Italy, with special attention paid to different age groups, from kindergarteners to secondary school students.
The repertoire ranges from classic fairy tales retold with a contemporary twist to original narratives, combining live acting and music. Titles such as Pippi Longstocking and the Pirate Blackbeard, Pinocchio, Hamelin, and The Pedal-Powered Storyteller guide young spectators on a journey that blends entertainment, emotion, and theatrical education.
Sunday performances are held in the Sala Consiliare of the Castello Ducale de Sangro, one of Torremaggiore's most iconic landmarks, while some closing events may take place in the open-air spaces of the Villa Comunale. Choosing the castle as a venue is no coincidence: introducing children to theatre within a historic monument bridges the gap between live performance and the discovery of local heritage.
One of the festival's hallmarks is its commitment to making theatre an experience available to all families: tickets cost a symbolic 4 euros, intended to encourage the widest possible participation and foster a lifelong habit of theatre-going among the youth. La Scena dei Ragazzi thus confirms itself as a valuable educational and cultural appointment for Torremaggiore and the entire Alto Tavoliere region.
The 2025/26 season brought the Sala Consiliare of the Castello Ducale de Sangro in Torremaggiore to life with a calendar of Sunday performances at 5:30 PM and weekday morning matinées for schools. Highlights included: Pippi Longstocking and the Pirate Blackbeard by Compagnia Radicanto (January 18), Hamelin (January 25), The Goddess of the Circle (February 4, matinée), Pinocchio A4 (February 8), The Essential (February 12), The Book-Bound Girl (February 19), and Rainbow (February 20). The festival concluded on June 4 with The Pedal-Powered Storyteller by Dino Parrotta. Sunday tickets were priced at 4 euros.
