A re-enactment of a mid-19th-century peasant wedding in the village of Gavignano

The "La Panarda" Historical Pageant is the signature event of Gavignano, a small town in the province of Rome overlooking the Sacco Valley in the Lazio region. Every June, the historic center transforms into an open-air stage for the re-enactment of a mid-19th-century peasant wedding: not just a costume parade, but a precise reconstruction of the social rituals that defined rural life in Lazio.
In central Italian tradition, the term panarda refers to the grand communal banquet held for major celebrations. In Gavignano, it gives the festival its name because the wedding lunch—abundant, shared, and open to the entire town—is the heart of the re-enactment: in a peasant wedding, food is not just a side dish, but a symbol of prosperity for the newlyweds.
Around fifty participants walk through the village alleys wearing period costume reproductions created by the cultural association "L'abito, la storia, le arti". The philological attention to detail is a highlight of the event: the bride wears a white lace shirt with a long red skirt and an apron that changes during the ceremony, decorated first with floral trim and then, after the vows, with lace and embroidery. The wife of the minente (a local notable) is distinguished by her green attire and a fifteen-centimeter lace ruffle on her skirt hem.
The re-enactment is complemented by the flag-wavers of Carpineto Romano, folk music and dance groups—past performers include the folk group "I Trillanti," who use handmade instruments from recycled materials—and craft and farmers' markets set up in squares and alleys, where local artisans sell ceramics, textiles, preserves, and traditional Lepini products. In the afternoon, a free painting workshop is usually held for children and adults, concluding with an exhibition of the works created.
Visiting the pageant is also a chance to explore a village that retains its medieval layout, dominated by a tower and linked to the memory of Pope Innocent III, who is traditionally said to have been born here. The steep alleys, arches, and views over the Sacco Valley provide a natural backdrop for the event: this is one reason why "La Panarda" has grown beyond a local celebration, becoming a staple in the Lazio events calendar and attracting visitors from nearby towns like Colleferro, Segni, Carpineto Romano, and Anagni.
The pageant effectively kicks off the town's summer season, which continues with other events organized by the Pro Loco Gavignano, including the historic Maccaruni gavignanesi Festival in August. Admission to the re-enactment is free; reservations are recommended for the banquet and the painting workshop.
The "La Panarda" Historical Pageant is traditionally held on a Sunday in mid-June in the historic center of Gavignano, in the province of Rome. For 2026, the Pro Loco Gavignano has not yet published the official date or the detailed program: the information provided here is based on the established structure of previous editions.
The structure of the day has been stable for years: a costumed wedding procession in the village, craft and farmers' markets, a performance by the flag-wavers of Carpineto Romano, folk music and dances, an afternoon painting workshop, and a tasting of maccaruni gavignanesi in Piazza dei Caduti. Admission has always been free.
By car: Take the A1 Milan-Naples motorway, exit at Colleferro, then follow the SS6 Casilina and the provincial road to Gavignano (approx. 10 km). It is just over 60 km from Rome. By train: Take the train to the Colleferro-Segni station on the Rome-Cassino line, then use a Cotral bus or taxi to reach the village.
The historic center is closed to traffic during the pageant: please park in the designated areas at the entrance to the town and continue on foot. Arriving early is recommended.
Admission to the pageant, markets, and shows is free. Reservations are required for the maccaruni gavignanesi tasting and the painting workshop via the Pro Loco.
The route winds through steep, cobbled alleys: comfortable shoes are essential. If the day is hot, bring water and a hat.
