About La Panarda

Every June, the village of Gavignano in the Lepini Mountains near Rome steps back two centuries for "La Panarda" Historical Pageant. Around fifty participants in meticulously recreated costumes bring a mid-19th-century peasant wedding to life, from preparing the dowry to the wedding feast. Medieval alleys come alive with craft and farmers' markets, folk music, flag-wavers, and tastings of the famous local maccaruni gavignanesi. Free admission.

A peasant wedding brought to life in the village

The "La Panarda" Historical Pageant is the signature event of Gavignano, a small town in the province of Rome overlooking the Sacco Valley in the Lazio region. Every June, the historic center transforms into an open-air stage for the re-enactment of a mid-19th-century peasant wedding: not just a costume parade, but a precise reconstruction of the social rituals that defined rural life in Lazio.

The meaning of "panarda"

In central Italian tradition, the term panarda refers to the grand communal banquet held for major celebrations. In Gavignano, it gives the festival its name because the wedding lunch—abundant, shared, and open to the entire town—is the heart of the re-enactment: in a peasant wedding, food is not just a side dish, but a symbol of prosperity for the newlyweds.

The procession and costumes

Around fifty participants walk through the village alleys wearing period costume reproductions created by the cultural association "L'abito, la storia, le arti". The philological attention to detail is a highlight of the event: the bride wears a white lace shirt with a long red skirt and an apron that changes during the ceremony, decorated first with floral trim and then, after the vows, with lace and embroidery. The wife of the minente (a local notable) is distinguished by her green attire and a fifteen-centimeter lace ruffle on her skirt hem.

Stages of the re-enactment

  • Preparation of the dowry, with the trousseau displayed and explained according to 19th-century customs
  • The wedding procession through the historic center, accompanied by folk music
  • The vows and the ritual, the central moment of the day
  • The banquet, featuring tastings of maccaruni gavignanesi in Piazza dei Caduti

Music, flag-wavers, and markets

The re-enactment is complemented by the flag-wavers of Carpineto Romano, folk music and dance groups—past performers include the folk group "I Trillanti," who use handmade instruments from recycled materials—and craft and farmers' markets set up in squares and alleys, where local artisans sell ceramics, textiles, preserves, and traditional Lepini products. In the afternoon, a free painting workshop is usually held for children and adults, concluding with an exhibition of the works created.

The village of Gavignano

Visiting the pageant is also a chance to explore a village that retains its medieval layout, dominated by a tower and linked to the memory of Pope Innocent III, who is traditionally said to have been born here. The steep alleys, arches, and views over the Sacco Valley provide a natural backdrop for the event: this is one reason why "La Panarda" has grown beyond a local celebration, becoming a staple in the Lazio events calendar and attracting visitors from nearby towns like Colleferro, Segni, Carpineto Romano, and Anagni.

A highlight of the Gavignano Summer

The pageant effectively kicks off the town's summer season, which continues with other events organized by the Pro Loco Gavignano, including the historic Maccaruni gavignanesi Festival in August. Admission to the re-enactment is free; reservations are recommended for the banquet and the painting workshop.
