A festival that defines the town's identity

The Ferragosto Palianese is much more than just a date on the calendar: it is the moment when Paliano, a village in the province of Frosinone, in the heart of the Ciociaria region and the Lazio region, truly comes together as a community. For days, the historic center transforms into an open-air stage, with squares, alleys, and stairways filled with music, theater, games, and food stalls. The event marks the grand finale of the Estate Palianese, the festival program promoted by the municipal administration that accompanies the town from June to August.

The Palio dell'Assunta and the Giostra del Turco

The symbolic heart of the Ferragosto Palianese is the historical re-enactment linked to the Palio dell'Assunta, organized by the cultural association of the same name together with the town's districts and neighborhoods. The collective memory honors Marcantonio Colonna, Lord of Paliano and commander of the papal fleet at Lepanto in 1571: his triumph is re-enacted every year with an impressive procession in Renaissance attire, involving hundreds of participants including ladies, men-at-arms, flag-wavers, and musicians.

The most anticipated moment is the Giostra del Turco, an equestrian skill test where riders from the districts must spear a ring held by a performer representing the Turk defeated at Lepanto while at a gallop. After each pass, the ring is replaced with a smaller one: the winner is the one who spears the most. It is a tradition that blends sport, spectacle, and historical memory, making the Paliano Ferragosto unique compared to any other festival in the area.

Music, entertainment, and comedy

Alongside the historical aspect, the Ferragosto Palianese has a robust spirit of popular entertainment. In recent years, the August program has hosted themed musical evenings, concerts by well-known artists, comedy and cabaret shows, as well as festivals dedicated to street theater and international folklore. Evenings often conclude late at night, with the audience moving freely from one square to another.

Food, wine, and local districts

A food and wine trail accompanies the event along the streets of Paliano: local districts and associations set up refreshment points featuring traditional Ciociaria dishes, from homemade pasta to grilled meats, as well as homemade desserts and wines from the Castelli and the Sacco Valley. There is also the Serata a Corte, where the districts compete by proposing Renaissance-inspired menus, served by costumed participants amidst period music and dance.

Fireworks, atmosphere, and hospitality

The closing is marked by a grand fireworks display, which illuminates the valley below and attracts crowds from neighboring towns as well. It is the moment to measure the festival's success: in 2025, the administration described it as a highly popular event, made possible by the work of volunteers, associations, the Red Cross, civil protection, and law enforcement.
