The Easter encounter between the Our Lady of Sorrows and the Risen Christ in the districts of Catania
At the heart of the Catanese Holy Week, Easter Sunday morning represents the most anticipated and moving moment: "La Pace," also known as "l'Incontro." It is a brief yet intense popular re-enactment of the meeting between Our Lady of Sorrows, still dressed in black as a sign of mourning, and the Risen Christ. The tradition is renewed every year, especially in the Picanello, San Cristoforo, and Ognina districts, where popular devotion is deeply rooted.
The two statues are carried on shoulders through the streets of the neighborhood and, following a script handed down through generations, they search for each other until the moment of the encounter. When the Virgin recognizes her risen Son, she casts off the black veil and dons a sky-blue mantle (sometimes white): it is the symbol of the end of mourning, of joy dissolving sorrow, and of Easter rebirth. This gesture, greeted by the emotion of the faithful, is the emotional heart of the entire celebration.
The Encounter is a popular festival that blends faith and spectacle. The climax is accompanied by:
It is an event also suitable for families with children, who experience an engaging visual spectacle accompanied by a simple and accessible religious meaning.
Unlike a single, centralized procession, the Pace of Catania is a tradition spread across individual neighborhoods: each parish in Picanello, San Cristoforo, and Ognina organizes its own Encounter independently and sets its own schedule. For this reason, exact times should be verified close to the festival at the local parishes or the Archdiocese of Catania.
La Pace is part of the rich landscape of Holy Week rites in Sicily, where Easter is experienced as a collective moment of faith and identity. In the Municipality of Catania, the capital of the metropolitan city of the same name in Sicily, this popular representation maintains a deep bond with the history of the neighborhoods and the local religious tradition, offering residents and visitors one of the most authentic moments of the Catanese spring.
The 2026 Easter Encounter was held on the morning of Sunday, April 5, Easter Day, in the three Catanese districts of Picanello, San Cristoforo, and Ognina. Each parish organized its own representation in the streets of the neighborhood, with independently set times. The typical features of the rite were confirmed: the mutual search of the statues of Our Lady of Sorrows and the Risen Christ, the culminating gesture of the veil change, and the accompaniment of fireworks, white doves, and children's choirs.
