The patronal feast of Sant'Agata li Battiati, blending faith, tradition, and pyrotechnic displays
The Feast of Saint Lawrence the Martyr is the primary religious and civil event in Sant'Agata li Battiati, a populous town in the Metropolitan City of Catania, Sicily, overlooking the south-eastern slopes of Mount Etna. Every year, on August 9th and 10th, the entire community gathers around its patron saint—the Roman deacon martyred on a gridiron for his faith in Christ—in a celebration that weaves deep popular devotion, centuries-old tradition, and grand spectacle.
The most intense moment occurs on the morning of August 10th: at 9:00 AM, inside the Mother Church of Maria Santissima Annunziata, the "Svelata" ritual takes place. Using a mechanism located behind the high altar, the saint's statue is slowly raised and revealed to the faithful as the traditional hymn resonates, amidst the emotion and exultation of those present. Immediately after, the solemn Eucharistic Celebration is held, presided over by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Catania or a high-ranking prelate, in the presence of city authorities.
On the evening of August 10th, around 8:15 PM, the artistic statue of Saint Lawrence and the precious relic are placed on the fercolo (processional float) amidst fireworks, festive bell ringing, and the throwing of multicolored paper. This marks the start of the grand procession through the town streets, passing through places steeped in memory such as the small church of the Veil of Saint Agatha—linked to the 1444 miracle when the saint's veil allegedly stopped the lava—and continuing along Via Garibaldi, the ancient Scala di Betta, Via Umberto, and Piazza Marconi. Upon returning to Piazza Chiesa Madre, the church facade becomes the stage for an extraordinary pyromusical show with 3D video mapping, featuring spectacular and moving effects, before the statue is reposed and the final hymn is sung.
The eve of August 9th is dedicated to solemn vespers and a traditional charity auction, organized by citizens to raise funds for those in need. The festival falls during the Perseids, the famous "tears of Saint Lawrence" (shooting stars), giving the celebration an almost cosmic charm. Amidst market stalls, illuminations, and the scents of traditional Sicilian confectionery, the Feast of Saint Lawrence attracts faithful and visitors from across the province of Catania and beyond, confirming its status as one of the most beloved identity-defining events in the region.
The 2026 edition confirms the traditional calendar of the patronal feast of Sant'Agata li Battiati.
Sant'Agata li Battiati is located at the gates of Catania, easily accessible by car from the Catania ring road (exit Sant'Agata li Battiati/Gravina) and via the urban and suburban AMTS bus network connecting the town to the center of Catania. Catania-Fontanarossa Airport is approximately 12 km away.
The celebrations take place on August 9th and 10th, with the epicenter at the Mother Church of Maria Santissima Annunziata and the streets of the historic center. Admission to all religious events and shows is free.
For the evening procession and the pyromusical show, it is advisable to find a spot in Piazza Chiesa Madre well in advance. In the middle of August, it is recommended to book accommodation in Catania or the neighboring Etna towns well ahead of time.
