The summer celebration of the patron saint of Aci Castello, featuring a procession, the 'Angel's Descent', and the blessing of the sea
In Aci Castello, a seaside village in the province of Catania overlooking the Cyclops Riviera, the devotion to Saint Maurus the Abbot is so deeply rooted that the saint is celebrated twice a year. The main liturgical feast falls on January 15th, but it is in the height of summer, on July 21st, that the town relives its patronal feast in a unique setting: the village nestled around the lava-stone Norman castle, with the Ionian Sea providing a backdrop to every moment of the celebration.
The date is no coincidence. On July 21, 1943, a bombing destroyed much of the church complex, yet the 18th-century bell tower and the precious wooden statue of the saint, covered in silver and gold, emerged unscathed. The mother church was later rebuilt and reopened for worship on July 21, 1961. Since then, this date has been dedicated to memory, prayer, and thanksgiving, evolving into the summer celebration of the patron saint.
The feast follows the ritual dear to the local devotion. In the morning, bells, firecrackers, and the brass band announce the day; inside the mother church, the statue of Saint Maurus is unveiled amidst the waving of white handkerchiefs and the prayers of the faithful. In the afternoon, the statue is placed on the vara (processional float) and carried in procession through the streets of the historic center.
The feast is also an opportunity to discover Aci Castello and its mother church, declared a national monument for its historical, architectural, and devotional value. A few steps away lies the Norman castle perched on the lava, and just to the north, the hamlet of Aci Trezza with the famous Cyclops sea stacks. It is a defining festival of the Ionian Sicily, deeply tied to the territory of the Municipality of Aci Castello.
The 2026 edition of the summer feast of Saint Maurus the Abbot is scheduled for July 21st in Aci Castello, in the province of Catania. The parish has announced that the detailed program will be released shortly.
The traditional structure of the day includes the morning opening with bells, firecrackers, and the band, followed by the unveiling of the statue in the mother church; in the afternoon, the procession of the float through the village streets, the Angel's Descent at Piazzale Porta Messina, the blessing of the sea at the Marina, and the concluding fireworks overlooking the Ionian Sea.
The detailed hourly program for the 2026 edition will be published shortly by the Parish of Saint Maurus the Abbot. The day will follow the traditional structure of the local festivities:
Aci Castello is located along the Ionian coast, a few kilometers north of Catania. By car: take the A18 Catania-Messina motorway (exit Acireale or San Gregorio) or the SS114 state road. By train: reach Catania Centrale, then take an AMTS bus towards the Cyclops Riviera. Nearest airport: Catania-Fontanarossa.
The festivities revolve around the Mother Church of Saint Maurus the Abbot, with the procession through the town center, the Angel's Descent at Piazzale Porta Messina, and the blessing of the sea with fireworks at the Marina.
Access to all religious and civil festivities is free.
