The Madonna della Salette Festival is the annual event that brings the San Cristoforo district of Catania to life every September, in the heart of the ancient Sicilian city. The celebration revolves around the liturgical feast of September 19th, a date that Catholic tradition links to the apparition of the Madonna della Salette, and culminates on the following Sunday with the solemn outdoor procession of the statue through the streets of the neighborhood.
The festival is preceded by a triduum of spiritual preparation held at the parish. On the evening of the festival Sunday, the float carrying the statue of the Virgin leaves the church of Santa Maria della Salette and travels through the streets of the district, accompanied by a brass band, fireworks, and the prayers of the faithful. The day concludes with a final pyrotechnic show and a solemn blessing. In the days surrounding the religious festival, the neighborhood fills with market stalls, social gatherings, and folk music.
The church of Santa Maria de La Salette, which gives its name to the street and the entire local cult, was begun on June 29, 1872, at the behest of Cardinal Giuseppe Benedetto Dusmet. Designed in a neo-Gothic style by engineer Carmelo Sciuto Patti, it was inspired by the French sanctuary of La Salette-Fallavaux. The building opened for worship on April 26, 1874, and housed a statue of the Virgin imported from Paris. Destroyed by bombing on May 11, 1943, the church was rebuilt after the war with its characteristic red brick and white stone facade. Since 1947-1948, the parish has been entrusted to the Salesians, who also manage the oratory dedicated to Don Bosco, which has always been a social and educational landmark for one of Catania's most popular districts.
More than just a religious appointment, the Madonna della Salette Festival represents a moment of strong cohesion for the San Cristoforo community, where faith merges with Catanese popular culture and street food traditions. The festival is part of the rich calendar of patronal feasts in the province of Catania and Sicily, a land where sacred occurrences have marked the lives of neighborhoods and towns for centuries.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna della Salette Festival in the San Cristoforo district of Catania is expected, as per tradition, in the month of September, around the liturgical feast of the 19th. At the current date, the parish has not yet published the official calendar or program. The triduum of preparation and the solemn procession of the Virgin's statue through the streets of the neighborhood, accompanied by a brass band and fireworks, are expected to take place. Information will be updated as soon as it becomes available.
The festival takes place in the San Cristoforo district of Catania, starting from the Santa Maria della Salette Parish (via La Salette).
