The summer celebrations in honor of the Patron Saint

In the heart of the Etna summer, the town of San Giovanni la Punta, in the province of Catania, gathers around its Patron Saint for the summer celebrations in honor of Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist. It is one of the most deeply felt events in the town, weaving together popular faith, historical memory, and community identity in a place that, according to tradition, was spared from a lava flow thanks to the Saint's intercession.
Devotion to Saint John has been documented since at least 1666, the year Bishop Bonadies visited the chapel housing the statue. For centuries, the celebration calendar included multiple dates throughout the year; today, the grand summer festival takes place on the third weekend of July, drawing the entire local community and visitors from neighboring Etna towns to the main square.
The most anticipated moment is the triumphant exit of the statue from the Mother Church: after being placed on the artistic wooden fercolo, Saint John is carried in procession amidst showers of multicolored paper that whiten the sky, the festive ringing of bells, applause from the crowd, and fireworks. The eve of the feast is dedicated to the procession of the relic and the evocative offering of wax by the entire community.
The festivities combine religious elements with a local fair atmosphere: marching bands, pyrotechnic displays, and, following the fireworks, the traditional cantata in honor of Saint John featuring sacred hymns of the local tradition. In 2004, the sacred allegorical float depicting the Saint's life was reintroduced, restoring a custom that had been interrupted for nearly fifty years. The streets and squares of the historic center provide the backdrop for a festival that remains a defining identity event for San Giovanni la Punta and the entire Etna foothills area in Sicily.
The summer festival is celebrated every year on the third weekend of July, with the eve on Saturday and the solemn day on Sunday. For updated dates and programs, it is recommended to follow the official channels of the Municipality and the Festival Committee.
