A Florentine tribute to Giorgio Gaber through music, theatre, and civic discourse
La Gaberiana is one of the most cherished events in the Florentine cultural summer: a festival created to celebrate the life, work, and thought of Giorgio Gaber, the legendary singer-songwriter, actor, and playwright who pioneered the 'teatro-canzone' (theatre-song) genre. The festival takes place in Quartiere 4 of the Municipality of Florence, specifically between Piazza dell'Isolotto and Piazza Giorgio Gaber, two symbolic locations that transform the event into both a local community celebration and a cultural gathering of national significance.
The heart and soul of the festival is journalist and playwright Andrea Scanzi. A profound expert on Gaber's work, he serves as artistic director and weaves the evenings together through discussions, dialogues, and introductions. His programme blends singer-songwriter performances, monologues, civic theatre, and reflections on the present, following the unmistakable style that Gaber bequeathed to Italian culture.
Each edition brings artists, intellectuals, musicians, and public figures to the stage to engage with Gaber's artistic and civic legacy. The festival's lineup has featured leading names from the Italian scene, ranging from singer-songwriters and actors to journalists and writers. The festival also presents the La Gaberiana Prize, an award dedicated to individuals who embody the critical spirit and civic commitment so dear to Gaber.
La Gaberiana is part of the extensive Estate Fiorentina (Florentine Summer) programme, the major cultural schedule promoted by the Municipality of Florence. The choice of Quartiere 4 and the Isolotto district is no coincidence: a square here has been named after Giorgio Gaber, and the festival restores a sense of cultural prominence to this corner of the city—far from the typical tourist circuits—attracting hundreds of spectators each evening. The free admission to all events reinforces the festival's popular and inclusive spirit.
The fourth edition of La Gaberiana takes place in Florence from July 20 to 23, 2026, in Quartiere 4, between Piazza dell'Isolotto and Piazza Giorgio Gaber. The festival, promoted as part of the Estate Fiorentina, maintains its format of four free-entry evenings dedicated to the work and thought of Giorgio Gaber, under the artistic direction of Andrea Scanzi.
Announced guests for 2026 include prominent figures of Italian culture and music such as Brunori Sas, Pif, and Tosca, alongside other artists and intellectuals who will engage with Gaber's legacy.
The four evenings (July 20, 21, 22, and 23, 2026) take place in Quartiere 4 between Piazza dell'Isolotto and Piazza Giorgio Gaber, with artistic direction by Andrea Scanzi and free admission.
The detailed programme for each evening, including times, additional guests, and the presentation of the La Gaberiana Prize, will be announced by the organisers in the weeks leading up to the event. We will update this page as soon as the full calendar is published.
