A village festival blending music and ancient flavors, held during the celebrations for Maria SS. delle Grazie
La Feste du Paisene, which means "the village festival" in the local dialect, is one of the most cherished spring events in Palagianello, a small town in the Province of Taranto, Puglia, nestled among the striking ravines of the Ionian arc. Part of the celebrations in honor of Maria SS. delle Grazie, the town's patron saint, this day is dedicated to rediscovering the traditions, flavors, and collective memory of the village.
The event traditionally takes place on the Tuesday following Easter Monday, extending the festive atmosphere of the Easter period with a program that weaves together culture, food and wine, and music. It is the day when the people of Palagianello, along with many emigrants returning home for the occasion, gather to celebrate their roots.
The cultural heart of the event is the guided tour of the Rock Church of San Nicola, one of the jewels of Palagianello's rupestrian heritage, organized by the I Portulani association and the local Infopoint. The itinerary, enriched by insights from archaeologists and local experts, leads visitors to discover the frescoes and the history of the settlements carved into the rock that characterize the ravine landscape.
The food and wine path finds its exceptional setting in the Castello Stella Caracciolo, where show cooking, masterclasses, and taste workshops dedicated to traditional local recipes take place, often in collaboration with local hospitality schools.
The most anticipated moment is the Festival of sciuscello and marro, which brings Piazza Giovanni Paolo II to life. The stars of the show are two iconic products of Apulian peasant cuisine: sciuscello and marro, traditional rural dishes that tell the gastronomic history of the village. The tasting turns the square into a large popular banquet, filled with ancient aromas and conviviality.
The day always concludes with a live concert in the square, which over the years has featured artists linked to the territory: from the group Terraross to the local singer-songwriter Pierdavide Carone. Music thus becomes the final moment of gathering, capable of uniting entire families under the banner of belonging. For those visiting the Province of Taranto in spring, La Feste du Paisene is an authentic opportunity to experience the most genuine side of Puglia, amidst popular devotion, rock-hewn heritage, and forgotten flavors.
