A medieval re-enactment in the shadow of the Caccamo Castle

La Castellana di Caccamo is one of Sicily's most beloved and deeply rooted historical re-enactments. Conceived in 1968 by Giorgio Ponte, founding president of the local Pro Loco, the event takes place every August in the town of Caccamo, in the province of Palermo, at the foot of and inside the famous medieval castle that dominates this Madonie village. For over fifty years, the event has drawn visitors and history enthusiasts, transforming the streets of the historic center into an open-air stage where the Sicilian Middle Ages come to life.
The heart of the event is the grand period-costume pageant, which commemorates the arrival of the Lord of Caccamo accompanied by his noble consort. Hundreds of participants parade along the route: ladies and knights in richly decorated attire, flag-wavers, men-at-arms, and commoners, in a succession of colors, music, and scenes of medieval life. The procession winds through the historic center until it reaches the Castle, where the most solemn part of the day takes place.
The most anticipated moment is the investiture ceremony. Among the young candidates, the Castellana and two Maids of Honor are elected: the chosen one, embodying the last lady of the Castle, symbolically receives the keys to the city, ideally taking possession of the fortress. It is a ritual that binds the community to its feudal past and renews Caccamo's identity every year.
The setting for the event is exceptional: the Caccamo Castle is one of the largest and best-preserved in Sicily, and the village is considered one of the most charming destinations in the Palermo hinterland. During the days of La Castellana, the historic center also comes alive with performances, craft stalls, and a fair, offering visitors an experience that blends history, folklore, and the popular traditions of the Sicilian Region.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Caccamo with the support of the Municipality of Caccamo and the contribution of the Sicilian Region, testifying to the cultural and identity value that this re-enactment holds for the entire community.
The appointment with La Castellana di Caccamo is confirmed for the summer of 2026, in August, in the usual setting of the medieval Castle and the historic center of Caccamo, in the province of Palermo. At the moment, the precise dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been released by the organizers.
As every year, the event will feature the grand historical costume pageant, the flag-wavers' performance, and the solemn investiture ceremony of the Castellana and her Maids of Honor. To find out the official dates and times, it is recommended to follow the channels of the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Caccamo.
Caccamo is located about 45 km from Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, taking the Caccamo-Termini Imerese exit and continuing along the SP road. The nearest train station is Termini Imerese, which is connected to Caccamo by bus services. The reference airport is Palermo Falcone-Borsellino (Punta Raisi).
Access to the pageant and celebrations in the historic center is generally free. For updated times, routes, and details, it is recommended to check the channels of the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Caccamo.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing for walking along the village's uphill streets and planning a visit to the Caccamo Castle, one of the most imposing medieval fortresses on the island.
