A month of culture and solidarity at the Capuchin Convent in Massa
La Cappucciniana is one of the most cherished summer events in Massa, the capital of the Massa-Carrara province in northern Tuscany. For an entire month, throughout July, the Capuchin Convent opens its doors to the city: the outdoor setting between Via dei Colli and the picturesque San Francesco Staircase transforms into a vibrant stage dedicated to theatre, music, cinema, books, and cultural meetings. The initiative is promoted by the Padre Damiano da Bozzano Association, which has been carrying out socio-cultural activities inspired by Franciscan values for several years.
What makes La Cappucciniana special is the spirit of solidarity that runs through the entire programme. The evenings, which are free to attend, are designed as an opportunity for the whole community to gather: proceeds collected during cultural activities and charity dinners support the historic Charity Canteen of the convent, a vital resource for those in need in the Apuan area. The festival is held under the Franciscan motto "Peace and Good", weaving together entertainment, reflection, and social commitment.
The programme is intentionally multidisciplinary, ranging from theatrical performances to concerts, open-air cinema screenings, book presentations, and debates on social issues. One of the most anticipated events of the edition is the concert by the Ricciotti Ensemble, the Dutch symphony orchestra that brings its forty musicians to Massa. There is also space for cinema, with dedicated screenings, and a day of impromptu painting set amidst the views and details of the convent complex.
The Capuchin Convent, overlooking the hills that dominate Massa, offers a unique backdrop: art and music dialogue with the silence of the cloister and the panorama that stretches from the city towards the Apuan Alps and the Versilia sea. Attending La Cappucciniana means discovering a lesser-known corner of Tuscany, experiencing culture in an intimate setting, and contributing to a concrete act of solidarity for the convent and the community.
The third edition of La Cappucciniana takes place from 1st to 31st July 2026 in the outdoor space between Via dei Colli and the San Francesco Staircase in Massa. The programme, promoted by the Padre Damiano da Bozzano Association under the motto "Peace and Good", alternates theatre, music, cinema, book presentations, and meetings on social issues. The festival confirms itself as an event that combines culture and solidarity, supporting the convent's historic Charity Canteen.
The third edition of La Cappucciniana brings the entire month of July 2026 to life with a multidisciplinary programme of theatre, music, cinema, books, and meetings, under the motto "Peace and Good". Among the events already announced:
The full calendar of evenings, including theatre, book presentations, and further musical events, will be released by the organisers in the weeks leading up to the festival.
The concert by the Ricciotti Ensemble, the Dutch symphony orchestra with 40 musicians, and the impromptu painting competition on Sunday 19th July dedicated to the views of the convent.
The Capuchin Convent is located along Via dei Colli, on the hills of Massa (54100). By car, it can be reached from the Massa exit of the A12 Genoa-Livorno motorway, continuing towards the centre and heading up towards the hills. By train, the Massa Centro station is served by the Tyrrhenian line; from the station, the convent is just a few minutes away by car.
Events take place in the outdoor space between Via dei Colli and the San Francesco Staircase, mainly in the evenings throughout the month of July. Admission is free; donations and charity dinners support the convent's Charity Canteen.
As these are evening outdoor events, it is advisable to bring a light jacket. Massa is an excellent base for visiting Versilia, the Apuan Alps, and nearby Carrara with its marble quarries.
