The 10 km road race that brings Atripalda and the Sabato Valley to life every May
L'Irpinia Corre is the classic road running race that energizes the streets of Atripalda every May. Located in the province of Avellino and overlooking the Sabato Valley in Campania, the town hosts this event which has grown from a local appointment into one of the most popular running events in Southern Italy. In 2026, it celebrated its fourteenth edition, with over 700 finishers and more than 765 registered participants.
The event is organized by ASD L'Irpinia Corre, led by Gianni Solimene, in close collaboration with the Atripalda municipal administration and with the support of the Province of Avellino, CONI, FIDAL, and US ACLI. The race is included in the national FIDAL calendar with a bronze classification and is open to FIDAL-registered athletes and members of sports promotion organizations.
The 10 km certified course winds through the heart of the city, creating an urban loop that organizers describe as "a path that lets you run fast, but gives nothing away." With minimal elevation gain, sharp turns, and long straights to push your pace, the route is lined with spectators. It is a circuit that has already seen impressive times, such as the 30'20" (an average of 3'02" per kilometer) set in 2026 by Yahya Kadiri of CarMax Camaldolese.
In 2026, the FIDAL Campania Regional Committee entrusted L'Irpinia Corre with the organization of the 10 km Regional Individual and Club Master Championships. This significant recognition brought the best clubs in Campania to Atripalda to compete for regional titles, further elevating the technical level of the race.
The event's format is designed to involve everyone, not just those chasing personal bests:
In recent years, the race has expanded into a weekend-long festival. On the eve of the race, Piazza Umberto I hosts guided tours of the city's heritage, informative meetings on nutrition and sports preparation, street food, and live music. On Sunday, in addition to the races, there are workshops for children, entertainment along the route, and initiatives by local associations. Services for visitors are also available, including a camper parking area at Parco delle Acacie and a mobile locker room for athletes.
Running in Atripalda means traversing one of the most historically rich centers in Irpinia. This is the site of the ancient Roman Abellinum, where the archaeological area and the early Christian basilica of Santo Ippolisto remain, and it is crossed by the Sabato River, which gives the valley its name. The event is also designed as a showcase for the region: promoting local Irpinian products, hosting visiting sports clubs, and involving schools are just as much a part of the project as the final race results.
The starting line blends elite athletes—often of international caliber—with amateur runners from across Central and Southern Italy. In recent years, African specialists and top-tier Italian runners have claimed victory in Atripalda, while the bulk of the field consists of running clubs from Campania, Master athletes, and those running their first official 10 km. This coexistence of serious competition and popular participation explains the event's success.
The 14th edition of L'Irpinia Corre took place on Sunday, May 10, 2026, in Atripalda, in the province of Avellino, with the start set for 10:00 AM. The race, classified as bronze in the national FIDAL calendar, took on special significance: the FIDAL Campania Regional Committee entrusted the ASD L'Irpinia Corre with the organization of the 10 km Regional Individual and Club Master Championships.
The certified course crossed the heart of the city, with a fast track that allowed for impressive performances: among the men, Yahya Kadiri (CarMax Camaldolese) won in 30'20" (an average of 3'02" per kilometer), while the women's victory went to Giulia Giorgi. The final tally shows over 765 registered participants and more than 700 athletes crossing the finish line, arriving from all over Campania and beyond.
Alongside the competitive race, 1 km and 1.5 km promotional runs for primary and middle school students took place, as well as a 6 km fun run open to everyone. The Joe Strummer Award, the unconventional recognition dedicated to runners who compete with personality and irony, was also confirmed.
The event expanded to the entire weekend: on Saturday, May 9, Piazza Umberto I hosted guided tours, an informative meeting on sports nutrition, street food, and live music; on Sunday, in addition to the races, there were activities for children, workshops by volunteer associations, performances along the route, and a photography exhibition. For athletes arriving from outside the province, the Parco delle Acacie camper parking area and a mobile locker room were available.
