The national Fiat Panda 4x4 rally in the Piana del Dragone, in Volturara Irpina
The Valle del Dragone Panda 4x4 Club Irpinia National Rally is the event that, at the start of September, turns Volturara Irpina into a hub for Fiat Panda 4x4 lovers. The local club gathers crews from across the peninsula: small, boxy utility vehicles, often with many years and many miles behind them, arriving in the province of Avellino for a day of driving on dirt roads, chatting with fellow owners, and exploring the local area.
The initiative is organized by the Panda 4x4 Club Irpinia a.s.d. with the patronage of the municipal administration and is included, edition after edition, in the Estate Volturarese calendar, the festival series that accompanies the town from May to October. The crews meet in the heart of the town, in Piazza Roma, from where the caravan of Pandas moves toward the plain and the surrounding hills.
Volturara Irpina overlooks the Piana del Dragone, a karst plateau at the foot of the Terminio massif, in the heart of the Picentini Mountains. In winter, when rain and melting snow cannot drain into the sinkholes, the plain transforms into the legendary Lago del Dragone; in summer and autumn, it returns to being a stretch of cultivated fields, surrounded by ancient beech forests and crossed by dirt tracks. It is this landscape, more than a sports track, that is the true star of the rally: the Panda 4x4 doesn't race, it wanders, enjoying the view.
A short distance from the town center is the equipped picnic area La Valle del Drago, nestled in a beech forest: tables with benches, grills, a refreshment point, local product kiosks, a children's play area, sports fields, and free parking. A convenient base for those arriving with family who want to turn the rally Sunday into an outdoor excursion.
Those who attend Panda 4x4 rallies know that the atmosphere is not that of a race. You travel in a convoy, at a slow pace, with the windows down; you help each other on the steepest sections, exchange tips on spare parts and setups, and photograph the most well-maintained vehicles alongside the most weathered ones. Over the years, the Panda 4x4 Club Irpinia has built a network of relationships with other Italian clubs, which explains why a town of just under three thousand inhabitants manages to attract crews from distant regions.
For the area, the effect is tangible: a flow of visitors on an early September weekend, restaurants and bars in the center coming to life, and a showcase for the Valle del Dragone that no promotional campaign could replicate with the same spirit.
In 2026, the rally reaches its sixth edition, scheduled for Sunday, September 6. The date was announced by the Municipality of Volturara Irpina and picked up by the local press along with the rest of the summer program. The fourth edition took place on Sunday, September 1, 2024, with the meeting point in Piazza Roma: the placement in the first weekend of September is therefore a consolidated choice, when the heat subsides and the plain still holds the colors of summer.
The rally is part of a particularly dense month for the town: in the surrounding days, the Fuorimano Irpinia Bike Trail is scheduled, dedicated to mountain biking and the valley's trails, as well as a beer festival under the municipal tent. From September 11 to 13, Piazza Roma hosts the XIV Fagiolo Quarantino Festival, dedicated to the Slow Food Presidium legume grown right in the Valle del Dragone, while in October the calendar closes with the Chestnut Festival, featuring the local blonde chestnut.
For those arriving from outside the region, lining up the rally with one of these festivals is the simplest way to understand what inland Irpinia is all about: mountains, short-supply-chain products, and a village life that in summer moves entirely to the square.
The Municipality of Volturara Irpina has included the 6th Valle del Dragone Panda 4x4 Club Irpinia National Rally in the 2026 Estate Volturarese program, setting the date for Sunday, September 6. It is the only major motor event in the Volturara calendar and, as local reports recall, it attracts enthusiasts from all over Italy.
The placement at the beginning of September confirms the habit of previous years: the fourth edition was held on Sunday, September 1, 2024, with the crews meeting in Piazza Roma. The rally falls during a very lively week for the town, between the Fuorimano Irpinia Bike Trail, the beer festival under the municipal tent, and, a few days later, the XIV Fagiolo Quarantino Festival (September 11-13).
As of today, the organizers have not yet released the details of the day: times, meeting point and time, off-road itinerary, registration fee, and any social lunch will be communicated by the Panda 4x4 Club Irpinia a.s.d. on their channels in the weeks preceding the event. Those who want to participate with their own vehicle should monitor them and book any accommodation in the area in advance.
The detailed program for the sixth edition has not yet been published by the organizers.
