The grand Krampus parade in the Casies Valley
The Krampusumzug der Höllischen Pichl/Gsies is one of the most anticipated winter events in the Casies Valley (Gsiesertal), located in the municipality of Gsies, in the province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige. The parade takes place in the village of Pichl, in the Unterplanken sports area, and is rooted in the ancient Alpine tradition of the Krampus—demonic figures who, according to South Tyrolean and Austrian folklore, accompany Saint Nicholas to symbolically punish the wicked during the Advent season.
At nightfall, as darkness envelops the valley, the Krampus groups make their entrance wearing hand-carved masks, terrifying faces, sharp teeth, furs, and imposing horns. The clanging of heavy cowbells and the dim lights create a dark and immersive atmosphere that attracts numerous spectators from near and far every year. The parade route is secured with barriers, allowing the public to enjoy the spectacle in complete safety.
The event is not just a procession but a true competition: Krampus groups from all over South Tyrol and Tyrol compete for the title of the most spectacular performance of the evening. An expert jury evaluates each group based on four criteria: dynamism, spectacle factor, stage presence, and the authenticity of the masks and costumes.
Alongside the infernal figures, Saint Nicholas is present, distributing sweets, nuts, and tangerines to children, creating a contrast between the fear of the Krampus and the sweetness of the Christmas tradition. Hot drinks are served along the route, helping spectators withstand the chill of the winter mountain evenings.
The evening is crowned by the after-show party, with music and celebrations continuing late into the night. Over the years, the Pichl parade has established itself as one of the benchmark Krampus events in the entire Puster Valley, blending spectacle, tradition, and conviviality in one of the most evocative Alpine settings in Trentino-Alto Adige.
The 2026 edition, the 21st, of the Krampusumzug in Pichl is scheduled for Saturday, November 28, 2026, with the parade starting at 7:00 PM from the Unterplanken sports area. As per tradition, Krampus groups from all over South Tyrol and Tyrol will compete before a jury that will evaluate their dynamism, spectacle, stage presence, and authenticity. Hot drinks will be available along the route, and the evening will conclude with the after-show party.

The Casies Valley (Gsiesertal) can be reached from the Puster Valley by taking the exit for Monguelfo-Tesido; the village of Pichl is just a few kilometres away. By car, follow the valley road to the Unterplanken sports area. The nearest train station is Monguelfo-Casies, on the Fortezza-San Candido line, which is then connected by local bus services.
The parade takes place on the street in the evening (starting at 7:00 PM). Warm clothing and footwear suitable for cold weather are recommended. Hot drinks are available along the route.
The event is not suitable for impressionable children due to the masks and the loud clanging of cowbells. Please respect the barriers and the organizers' instructions.
