The Christmas market in the heart of San Candido, at the foot of the Tre Cime
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Dolomiten Weihnachtsmarkt, the Christmas market in the Dolomites, takes place in the historic center of San Candido (Innichen in German), a picturesque village in the Upper Puster Valley in the province of Bolzano, in the heart of the Trentino-Alto Adige region. The wooden huts are set up along the pedestrian zone, surrounding the monumental Romanesque Collegiate Church of Saints Candidus and Corbinian, one of the most important Romanesque buildings in the Alps. Nestled at the foot of the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the market combines the atmosphere of a South Tyrolean Advent with the charm of a snow-covered Dolomite landscape.
Operating since 2013, the market is intentionally intimate: around twenty stalls managed by local artisans, hobbyists, and producers. This is not a large commercial market, but a village-scale event where every hut tells a story of a craft or tradition. Featured products include:
The gastronomic offerings are authentically Puster Valley: dumplings (canederli), polenta with cheese, goulash, strudel, pretzels, and baked goods accompany the ritual of mulled wine and Apfelglühmix. You will also find Zelten, the traditional South Tyrolean Christmas fruit bread rich in dried fruits and candied peel, gingerbread (Lebkuchen), and local staples like speck, mountain cheese, and herbal mountain teas.
During the weeks of Advent, the market hosts live musical performances with bands, children's choirs, and small acoustic ensembles that enliven the square. Nearby, you can visit the nativity scene exhibition set up at the Franciscan convent, and for the little ones, there are dedicated spaces with creative workshops and Christmas-themed entertainment. Those looking for an unusual experience can also discover the nearby underground Christmas market at the DoloMythos museum, a separate but complementary event.
The Dolomiten Weihnachtsmarkt is the ideal choice for those seeking an authentic Christmas, far from the large tourist crowds. The Municipality of San Candido, with its pedestrian streets, historic facades, and views of the Dolomite peaks, offers an intimate and evocative setting, perfect to combine with a walk in the snow, cross-country skiing, or a hike in the Dolomitenregion 3 Zinnen.
The 2026 edition of the Dolomiten Weihnachtsmarkt in San Candido is expected, as per tradition, during the Advent period, with an opening presumably in the last weekend of November and continuing until Epiphany. The official dates, times, and program have not yet been communicated by the organizers: they will be published on the San Candido Tourist Association website and the Dolomitenregion 3 Zinnen portal. The market's format remains confirmed: wooden huts featuring local artisans, gastronomic specialties of the Puster Valley, and the intimate atmosphere of the village at the foot of the Tre Cime.
San Candido is located in the Upper Puster Valley, at the eastern end of South Tyrol. By train, the San Candido station is served by the Puster Valley line (Fortezza–San Candido, continuing towards Lienz in Austria). By car, it can be reached via the SS49 Puster Valley road. Free parking is available at the west and east entrances of the village.
Access to the market is free and open to the public. The market is located in the pedestrian area around the Collegiate Church, easily reachable on foot from the center.
Dress in warm clothing: winter temperatures at this altitude can be harsh. It is worth combining your visit with a day on the snow in the Tre Cime ski area. The South Tyrol Guest Pass, often included in your stay, allows for free use of public transport.
