The ancient Advent tradition of the Sarntal Valley, unique in all of South Tyrol
Klöckeln is an ancient Advent custom that has been preserved in this form only in the Sarntal Valley, the side valley north of Bolzano in the heart of South Tyrol. Documented since the 16th century, this tradition does not exist anywhere else in South Tyrol or Central Europe, and it is considered one of the most original and mysterious folk rituals in the entire Alpine region.
On the three Thursday evenings of Advent preceding the winter solstice, groups of hooded and masked men, the Klöckler, head out at dusk and travel from house to house through the valley's villages, particularly the main town of Sarnthein. Dressed in traditional clothing with their faces covered, they advance while making a great racket with cowbells, sticks, and ram's horns, knocking on doors to ask for gifts.
Each group, called a Kutt, includes two men dressed as a bridal couple, the Zussler: refusing them entry into the house is said to bring bad luck, so it is customary to welcome them by offering schnapps and sweets. In return, the Klöckler sing two traditional songs, the Klöckellied and the Danklied (the thanksgiving song), set to an ancient melody passed down from generation to generation. Wealthy homes and prominent local figures—the doctor, the pharmacist, the parish priest—receive special visits.
Scholars still debate the origins of Klöckeln. Some trace its roots back to pre-Christian fertility rites linked to the darkest nights of the year; others interpret it as a Christian custom of begging. In the past, participation was strictly reserved for men: women caught taking part risked, according to tradition, being dunked in the village fountain.
Klöckeln is part of the rich Christmas calendar of the Sarntal Valley, which also includes the charming Sarner Alpenadvent market, set up in the historic center of Sarnthein with wooden huts, local handicrafts, and typical products such as Sarnar Toppar wool slippers and traditional wool jackets. The combination of the market and the Klöckeln ritual makes Advent in the Sarntal Valley one of the most authentic experiences in South Tyrol.
There is no set route or schedule: the groups move freely through the village, and encountering the Klöckler is always unexpected and fascinating. For those visiting the valley on the evenings of the three Thursdays of Advent, wandering through the streets of Sarnthein at dusk is the best way to be surprised by this ancient ritual. Access is free and open to all.
The 2026 Klöckeln in the Sarntal Valley takes place on the three Thursdays of Advent: December 3, 10, and 17, 2026. At dusk, groups of hooded and masked Klöckler head out into the streets of Sarnthein and the other villages of the valley, making cowbells, sticks, and ram's horns resound.
As per tradition, each group includes the Zussler, the masked bridal couple, and knocks from house to house: in exchange for schnapps and sweets, the Klöckler sing the Klöckellied and the Danklied. There is no fixed route or schedule, and the unpredictability of the encounter is what makes these Advent evenings magical. Access is free.
