Colorful kites in the sky of the Reggiano Apennines, at the Pieve di San Vitale di Carpineti
Kites Festival is the event dedicated to kite flying that animates the plateau of Monte Leto, next to the evocative Pieve di San Vitale di Carpineti, in the heart of the Reggiano Apennines. Organized by the association Bailando por la Vida APS, which manages the Pieve complex, the event transforms the ridge into a colorful sky of kites dancing with the wind for a day, in a natural setting of rare beauty.
The common thread of the event is a message of pluralism, dialogue, and inclusion as tools for peace: the multicolored kites moving in the wind become the symbol of an open and welcoming community. Colorful installations are set up along the meadow, while adults and children can launch their own kite in just a few steps, enjoying a day of friendship and sustainability.
The day, which takes place from 10 AM until sunset, offers various activities:
The event is part of the calendar of the Pieve di San Vitale, an ancient Romanesque building nestled in the UNESCO MaB Reserve of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and now a multifunctional space with a stone museum, hostel, and refreshment area. We are in the Municipality of Carpineti, in the province of Reggio Emilia, in Emilia-Romagna: a territory of ridges, Matildic castles, and villages that, in spring, offers an ideal setting for an outdoor day of nature, culture, and conviviality.
The second edition of Kites Festival took place on Sunday, May 24, 2026 (with postponement to May 31 in case of bad weather) on the plateau of Monte Leto, next to the Pieve di San Vitale di Carpineti.
From 10 AM to sunset, the meadow was filled with kites and colorful installations. The program included the kite market from 10 AM to 7 PM (in collaboration with Mangiafuoco Shop of Reggio Emilia), the free photography contest "The Multicolored Blue" with subsequent awards, the free non-stop shuttle from 10 AM to 7 PM along Via Santa Caterina, and a refreshment bar with gnocco fritto, focaccia, and sandwiches. It was also possible to walk the Sentiero Dorato towards the Castle of Carpineti.
The Pieve di San Vitale is located at Via Varigolo 2 in Carpineti (RE), on the plateau of Monte Leto. By car, it can be reached from the SS63 and the provincial roads of the Reggiano Apennines. On the day of the event, a free non-stop shuttle service is available from 10 AM to 7 PM along Via Santa Caterina.
Free admission, from 10 AM until sunset. Market and shuttle from 10 AM to 7 PM, refreshment bar until late evening.

In case of bad weather, the event may be postponed: always check the social media pages of the Pieve di San Vitale before traveling. Bring comfortable shoes for the meadow and, if possible, your own kite.
