About Kalòs Living Nativity

Every year, between Christmas and Epiphany, the Parco Kalòs – Archeodromo del Salento in Caprarica di Lecce transforms into an ancient Bethlehem from two thousand years ago. The Kalòs Living Nativity, one of the most evocative and popular in Salento and Puglia, brings together over a hundred performers who recreate ancient crafts, rural and pastoral life, Herod's court with his centurions, and the Nativity Grotto. On January 6th, the arrival of the Three Wise Men concludes the event with a grand parade of all the characters.

A living nativity in Italy's largest experimental archaeology park

The Kalòs Living Nativity is one of the most distinctive and beloved Christmas traditions in Salento. It takes place in Caprarica di Lecce, a small town in the Province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento and Puglia, within the Parco Kalòs – Archeodromo del Salento, widely recognized as Italy's largest experimental archaeology park. On the gentle slopes of the Serra di Galugnano, in an area preserving traces of Roman settlements, the park transforms each year into an ancient Bethlehem from two millennia ago.

Over a hundred performers and scientifically accurate reconstructions

What makes this event unique is the philological care of the setting: over a hundred performers animate the various sections of the route, bringing ancient crafts and rural and pastoral society to life. In the workshops, you will find shoemakers, coopers, blacksmiths, basket weavers, and leather workers, while the Roman section reconstructs Herod's court, the sacred temple, and the centurions. At the center of the route lies the Nativity Grotto, the spiritual and emotional heart of the entire nativity scene.

A journey through nature, history, and tradition

Visitors traverse the naturalistic, Roman, and rural sections of Kalòs, immersed in a landscape of olive trees and dry-stone walls typical of Salento. The reconstruction combines the religious dimension of the nativity with the mission of the Archeodrome, which offers experimental archaeology activities related to the Messapian and Roman civilizations of the territory all year round.

The arrival of the Three Wise Men

The most anticipated moment is the Epiphany: on January 6th, the event is enriched by the arrival of the Three Wise Men, featuring a parade of all the characters and activities dedicated to children. A children's area, street food stalls with local flavors and products, a restaurant, and a bar complete the experience, along with free parking.

A Salento tradition

Born from the passion of its founder and artistic creator Giovanni Quarta, the Kalòs Living Nativity has grown over the years to become one of the most evocative and popular living nativity scenes in Puglia. Organized by the Meridies association with the patronage of the Municipality of Caprarica di Lecce and the Province of Lecce, it remains an unmissable event in the Salento Christmas calendar.
