The early music festival curated by Gli Invaghiti, spanning Chivasso and Piedmont
Kalendamaya is the International Festival of Early Music and Culture that brings life to Chivasso, in the Metropolitan City of Turin, and various locations throughout Piedmont every year. It is organized by the Gli Invaghiti association, founded in Chivasso in 2008 by its current president, Fabio Furnari. The association acts as a study and promotion center for classical, medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque music and art, focusing primarily on the rediscovery, transcription, and performance of ancient scores.
What makes Kalendamaya special is its philological focus: concerts are designed to recreate the atmosphere of each era through the use of original period instruments. The repertoire spans from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period and often draws from manuscripts and scores preserved in Piedmontese libraries and archives, the result of research by Gli Invaghiti themselves. The program features composers such as Monteverdi, Sigismondo d'India, Scarlatti, and Handel, alongside music from 17th-century Italy.
While its heart is in Chivasso, Kalendamaya is a travelling festival that hosts concerts in fascinating locations across the region: historic churches, the Castello della Manta in the Cuneo area, Settimo Vittone, Casalborgone, and even Pont-Saint-Martin in the Aosta Valley. In Chivasso, events are held in evocative venues such as the Church of San Giuseppe Lavoratore and the Montegiove spaces, in collaboration with the Municipality of Chivasso.
With over 150 concerts performed by its ensemble, historical reconstructions of musical chapels, multidisciplinary conferences, and research activities, Gli Invaghiti have made Kalendamaya a highly anticipated event for early music enthusiasts in Piedmont. Admission to the concerts is frequently free or by voluntary donation, a choice that reflects the festival's cultural and educational mission.
The 18th season of Kalendamaya confirms the travelling format of the festival curated by Gli Invaghiti, with concerts distributed between June and July 2026 in various locations in Piedmont and, in Chivasso, at the Montegiove spaces. The program alternates between music from 17th-century Italy, composers such as Monteverdi, Sigismondo d'India, Scarlatti, and Handel, and themes ranging from the Middle Ages to the Baroque.
Announced events include "VIVA LA RIVOLUZIONE – VIVA IL RE!" (June 14, 9:00 PM), "UN VEZZOSO MIRAR" (June 26 at 9:00 PM and June 27 at 5:00 PM), "ABELARDO ED ELOISA" (June 28, 6:00 PM), and the Chivasso concert "MUSICA S-PARSA VENDESI" (July 10, 9:00 PM, at Montegiove). Concerts are held in prestigious venues such as the Castello della Manta, Settimo Vittone, Casalborgone, and Pont-Saint-Martin.
The season's repertoire includes "Songs to be sung and played in 17th-century Italy" with compositions by Monteverdi, Sigismondo d'India, Scarlatti, and Handel, performed on original period instruments. Kalendamaya concerts are held in various venues across Piedmont. In Chivasso (Metropolitan City of Turin, postal code 10034), events take place in locations such as the Church of San Giuseppe Lavoratore (Via Blatta 30) and the Montegiove spaces.
Chivasso is well-connected: it can be reached by train (a major railway hub on the Turin–Milan line) and by car via the A4 Turin–Milan motorway. For decentralized venues, a car is recommended.
Admission to concerts is free or by voluntary donation, depending on the event, subject to availability.
