The Italian Freediving Championship in the deep waters of Lake Garda
The Italian Outdoor Freediving Championship returns to Riva del Garda, in the heart of Garda Trentino, for its seventh consecutive edition. The competition, organized by FIPSAS (Italian Federation of Sport Fishing and Underwater Activities) in collaboration with the ASD Gruppo Sommozzatori Riva del Garda, has firmly established itself as one of the most prestigious inland freediving events in Italy.
The competition area is set up in the deep, crystalline waters of Lake Garda, just off Porto San Nicolò in Riva del Garda, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). The exceptional depth of the lake in this section and the clarity of the water make this site one of Italy's most iconic locations for competitive deep-water freediving.
Athletes compete in the main outdoor freediving specialties:
Each discipline requires a single breath descent and ascent without changing one's weight: a challenge that combines athletic preparation, refined technique, and immense mental control.
Open to international athletes, the Riva del Garda Championship attracts some of the world's best freedivers. Over the years, the waters of Lake Garda have hosted numerous inland records, with world-class performances that have solidified the event's reputation well beyond national borders.
Beyond the competition itself, the event is a great opportunity to introduce the public to the world of freediving. From the shores of Porto San Nicolò, enthusiasts and curious onlookers can follow the competition, the award ceremonies, and the focused, respectful atmosphere that defines this discipline, all set in one of Trentino's most beloved tourist destinations.
With its mild climate and constant winds, Riva del Garda has long been a capital for outdoor sports: sailing, windsurfing, rock climbing, mountain biking, and, of course, freediving. The Italian Outdoor Freediving Championship enriches the Garda Trentino summer calendar every year with a major national and international sporting event.
The 2026 Italian Outdoor Freediving Championship will be held in Riva del Garda from July 17 to 19, 2026, for its seventh consecutive edition. The competition area is set up in the waters of Porto San Nicolò, on Lake Garda. The competition days are dedicated to constant weight with fins (monofin and bifins), constant weight without fins, and free immersion, with athlete meetings in the morning, warm-ups, timed descents, and award ceremonies in the afternoon.
The competition, organized by FIPSAS with the Gruppo Sommozzatori Riva del Garda, is open to international athletes and attracts some of the world's best freedivers.
The competition area is located at Porto San Nicolò in Riva del Garda, along Viale Rovereto. By car: take the A22 motorway exit Rovereto Sud - Lago di Garda Nord, then follow the SS240 to Riva del Garda. By train: arrive at Rovereto station, which is connected by bus to Riva del Garda.
The event, which takes place in the water and along the shores of Porto San Nicolò, is free for the public to watch. Participation in the competitions is reserved for registered athletes.
