Floats, parades, and entertainment in the heart of Ispica's Baroque center
In the heart of south-eastern Sicily, the Ispica Carnival is one of the most beloved winter traditions in Ispica, a Baroque town in the province of Ragusa. For several days, the historic center transforms into an open-air stage filled with confetti, masks, and the infectious energy of allegorical floats parading along the main street toward Piazza Unità d'Italia.
The heart of the event lies in the magnificent allegorical floats, handcrafted by master artisan Gianluigi Pitrolo from Rosolini. Each year, these papier-mâché structures reinterpret a different theme—ranging from Iblean local heritage and pop culture to timeless classics—creating a visual spectacle that draws families and curious visitors from across the region.
The Ispica Carnival is a deeply communal celebration: local schools, from nursery to middle school, kick off the festivities with children's costume processions, while evenings are dedicated to musical shows, DJ sets, and live entertainment on the stage in Piazza Unità d'Italia. In recent years, a festival of traditional carnival products has been added, blending the celebration with the flavors of local gastronomy.
The event is coordinated by the Cuore Antico Association, with the patronage of the Municipality of Ispica and the support of the Free Municipal Consortium of Ragusa, alongside contributions from local merchants and sponsors. It is a town-scale carnival, free and open to all, which celebrates the historic center and squares of one of the pearls of the Sicilian Baroque.
The Ispica Carnival is traditionally held during the carnival season, between late February and early March, with events spread over several days and culminating in the grand float parades on Sunday and Shrove Tuesday.
The 2026 Ispica Carnival opened on Thursday, February 12, with the inauguration and costume parade of nursery and primary school children, continuing in the following days with the involvement of middle school students. The grand parade of allegorical floats, created by master artisan Gianluigi Pitrolo and inspired by Disney characters from Inside Out and Lilo & Stitch, colored the town's main street, accompanied by shows and concerts. Due to adverse weather conditions, the closing event was postponed to Sunday, February 23, 2026.
New this year: the festival of traditional carnival products curated by Gianni Scapellato.
