The travelling festival of folk music and Apennine cuisine: the opening stage in Salza Irpina
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Irpinia Terra di Mezzo is a travelling festival conceived and directed by Fiorenza Calogero, a singer and interpreter of the Campanian folk tradition, and organized by the Migrazioni Sonore association. The formula is simple and recognizable: each stage takes place in a different town in the inland areas, where a historic palace or a square becomes the setting for an evening of music, local heritage, and peasant cuisine. It is not a single-location event, but a journey that, over several weeks, weaves together various villages in the province of Avellino and, starting from 2025, the Sannio area of Benevento.
The Municipality of Salza Irpina — a town of just over seven hundred inhabitants at an altitude of 547 metres in the province of Avellino, Campania — historically hosts the opening stage of the calendar. The town owes its identity to the ancient salt springs that gave it its name, a narrative thread that the festival incorporates into its itineraries. The heart of the evening is the Palazzo Imperiale D'Afflitto, a noble residence in the historic centre whose halls host the tables, tastings, and meetings with local producers and chefs.
The most distinctive format of Irpinia Terra di Mezzo is the Salotti Enogastronomici, curated by Laura Rocco: small, exclusive dinner parties organized in successive shifts, where dishes are not just served but also explained. The menu creates a dialogue between Apennine raw materials and Mediterranean culinary traditions, following the theme chosen for each edition.
Alongside the gastronomic aspect runs a musical programme that looks to the Mediterranean basin and oral traditions. Fiorenza Calogero's artistic direction brings Neapolitan and Campanian folk repertoires to the Irpinian villages, connecting them with voices and instruments from other shores. In 2025, this vocation translated into a collaboration with the Festival Sete Sóis Sete Luas, a cultural network connecting over thirty cities across twelve Mediterranean and Atlantic countries.
The fifth edition, titled «Oltre il Confine» (Beyond the Border), took place from 30 August to 4 October 2025, involving six southern Apennine municipalities — Salza Irpina, Torrioni, Montefusco, Santo Stefano del Sole, Pietradefusi, and San Giorgio del Sannio — and brought the festival outside the borders of Irpinia for the first time, with San Giorgio del Sannio as the lead municipality. The lineup featured musicians from Corsica, Spain, Portugal, Tunisia, Greece, Cape Verde, and Brazil. As always, Salza Irpina hosted the inaugural evening of the Food and Wine Salons.
Those who come to Salza Irpina for this evening will not find a typical village fair or a large concert, but something more intimate: an open palace, a few tables, and a story that ties together salt, peasant cuisine, and Mediterranean music. It is a great gateway to discovering inland Irpinia, its wines — from Fiano di Avellino to Greco di Tufo, produced just a few kilometres away — and a network of villages that come back to life in the summer thanks to cultural projects like this.
Official information on the 2026 edition of Irpinia Terra di Mezzo is not yet available. The last documented edition is the fifth, which took place between 30 August and 4 October 2025 across six municipalities between Irpinia and Sannio, with the inaugural evening of the Food and Wine Salons in Salza Irpina, in the province of Avellino.
As with every travelling festival, the calendar of stages and the municipalities involved are defined year by year: it is therefore possible that the route composition may change. We recommend checking the dates on the official festival website and the organization's social media channels, as well as the pages of the Municipality of Salza Irpina, before planning your trip.
Salza Irpina is easily reached by car from the Avellino area; the reference motorway exit is Avellino Est on the A16 Naples-Canosa. The historic centre is small: it is advisable to leave your car in the available spaces at the entrance to the village and continue on foot to the Palazzo Imperiale D'Afflitto.
The Food and Wine Salons have limited seating and require reservations, usually via WhatsApp at the number indicated by the organization for each edition. The evening sensory trails with tastings and cultural excursions are open-access.
The village is located at an altitude of 547 metres: even at the end of August, the evening can be cool, so it is best to bring a light jacket. For accommodation, the most numerous options are in Avellino and the towns of the Sabato and Serinese valleys, all a short distance away.
Programme and updates are available on the official festival website and on the Irpinia Terra di Mezzo social media channels.
