The allegorical float parade in the village of Iolo, Prato
The Iolo Carnival is one of the most beloved events in the village of Iolo, within the municipality of Prato, in Tuscany. Originally an initiative of the parish oratory, it has grown over time into a true village festival, attracting children, teenagers, and families to the streets of the town. The event is organized by the Oratory of the San Pietro Parish in Iolo, with the support of the Misericordia for security and the collaboration of local associations.
The heart of the day is the allegorical float parade, carefully crafted by volunteers and the youth of the oratory. The floats come to life around characters beloved by children, drawn from fairy tales, cartoons, and animated films: some are set up to allow the little ones to climb aboard and experience the festival as protagonists. Amidst confetti and streamers, the village of Iolo fills with masks, music, and joy for an entire afternoon.
The Iolo Carnival is, above all, a participatory event: every year, dozens of young people and groups of parents get involved to build the floats, prepare costumes, and bring the parade to life. It is this spirit of sharing and belonging that makes the event a defining moment for the Iolo community, capable of uniting different generations around a simple and genuine tradition.
The Iolo Carnival is part of the rich calendar of carnival festivities in the Prato area, which during the same period also features the villages of Paperino and the nearby towns of Vaiano, Montemurlo, and Carmignano. For those visiting the province of Prato in winter, it is an ideal opportunity to discover the popular traditions of Tuscany away from the major tourist circuits, in an authentic and family-friendly atmosphere.
Designed especially for children, the Iolo Carnival offers an afternoon of outdoor fun with free admission. The festival is an excellent opportunity to experience Carnival in a serene and familiar way, immersed in the warmth of a small community in the Prato plains.
The 28th edition of the Iolo Carnival was held on Sunday, February 8, 2026, with the parade starting at 3:00 PM from the village of Iolo, in the municipality of Prato.
The protagonists were three allegorical floats, two of which were set up to allow the little ones to climb aboard: one dedicated to Aladdin and the other to Alice in Wonderland. About 80 young people from the oratory and a group of about twenty parents participated in the preparation and animation of the festival.
The event was organized by the Oratory of the San Pietro Parish in Iolo, with the support of the Misericordia for security. Free admission.
