The themed carnival in Ficarra that chooses to be different every year
The Insolito Carnevale is the signature carnival event of Ficarra, a charming village in the Nebrodi Mountains located in the Province of Messina, Sicily. Launched in 2015 by an intuition of the Cento Archi Natural Shopping Center, the event immediately established itself as an unconventional carnival: no allegorical float parades, but a grand, unique theme that changes every year, redesigning the face of the town for an entire day.
The formula that made the Insolito Carnevale famous is its sheer unpredictability. Over the years, themes have ranged wildly: from TV series to the Roaring Twenties, from the Belle Époque to Hollywood and the Oscars, all the way to the Eighties and disco music. Each edition enhances the natural architectural beauty of the historic center, which is respected and reinterpreted through the carnival spirit with thematic installations, stage sets, and costumes.
The hub of the event is Piazza Umberto I, in the heart of Ficarra's historic center, which for the occasion fills with live music, DJ sets, food stalls, and immersive scenery. The day unfolds from the afternoon until late at night, with a festive atmosphere that unites young and old, famous for the event's iconic greeting: «Buongiorno, mascherine!».
What sets the Insolito Carnevale apart is the strong community involvement: citizens, volunteers, associations, and local restaurateurs participate actively in building the event, from creating the sets to preparing themed dishes. The event is organized by the CCN Cento Archi in collaboration with the Municipality of Ficarra, the Pro Loco Ficarrese, the Union of Municipalities Terra dei Lancia, and local associations.
Over the years, the Insolito Carnevale has become a defining identity for Ficarra and the neighboring Nebrodi villages, attracting visitors and curious onlookers drawn by the originality of the proposal. In some years, the event has even featured a summer version, confirming the vitality of a festival that continues to reinvent itself without losing its bond with Sicilian popular tradition.
For 2026, the Insolito Carnevale of Ficarra chose a Mexican theme, transforming Piazza Umberto I into a colorful «fiesta» starting at 2:30 PM on Sunday, March 1st.
The program featured musical entertainment by the Black & White Band and DJ Tommaso Marafà, with animation until late at night, as well as a mariachi band with trumpets and guitarrón. Attractions included colorful piñatas to break, scenery inspired by Mayan pyramids and the Día de los Muertos, and traditional games. Mexican cuisine prepared by local restaurateurs was also a highlight. Admission was free.
Ficarra is located in the Nebrodi Mountains, in the hinterland of the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (exits Brolo or Rocca di Caprileone), then continuing inland. The nearest train station is Brolo-Ficarra-Capo d'Orlando, on the Tyrrhenian line, from where you can continue by car to the village.
Access to the event is free and open to the public.
