The grand Christmas park featuring artisanal Apulian light displays in Monopoli
Illuminandia is the grand Christmas park that has transformed the historic centre of Monopoli, in the Metropolitan City of Bari, into a true land of light. Covering an area of 15,000 square metres, the entire old town and the seafront light up with monumental installations and immersive scenery, for the first time entirely crafted with typical Apulian light displays carved from wood. The project has established Monopoli as one of the premier Christmas destinations in all of Puglia.
The heart of the event is in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, home to the Park of the Swings of the Stars: an imposing 22-metre-tall light tree is surrounded by twelve monumental swings, each 5 metres high and dedicated to a zodiac sign. It is the iconic image of Illuminandia, a participatory installation where visitors can literally step inside the light.
The illuminated trail winds through the entire historic centre. In Piazza Palmieri, you can admire the Snow Dome, a 15-metre-tall monumental work conceived as a multisensory experience. Piazza Garibaldi hosts the 6-metre-tall Nativity of Light, created by master craftsman Domenico Galluzzi. The old port transforms into the Santa Claus village, with illuminated boats and kiosks overlooking the sea, while the bandstand (Cassa Armonica) houses the Christmas residence with shows and workshops.
Illuminandia celebrates a craft that is an identity of the region: the light displays were created by Faniuolo Illuminazioni of Putignano, a company with over a century of tradition. The choice of carved wood structures, rather than the usual metal, gives the event an artisanal and traditional character that distinguishes it from ordinary Christmas lighting.
Beyond the installations, Illuminandia offers a packed calendar of concerts, shows, children's workshops, and markets along the main streets of the centre, from Via Umberto to Via Cialdini. A small train travels through the village, spreading music and the scent of sweets, while elves animate the squares: an atmosphere designed for families and the many tourists who choose Puglia even in winter.
Overlooking the Adriatic, Monopoli is one of the pearls of the Apulian coast, with its historic port, cathedral, and ancient centre of white houses. With Illuminandia, the Municipality of Monopoli has built an event that aspires to become a permanent fixture in the regional tourist calendar, capable of extending the season well beyond the summer.
The Municipality of Monopoli has announced the return of Illuminandia for Christmas 2026, following a first edition described as the most successful Christmas project in Puglia. The stated goal is to consolidate the event as a permanent fixture in the regional tourist calendar.
At the moment, the precise dates and the programme for the 2026 edition have not been communicated. Following the first edition, one can expect the grand park of carved wooden Apulian light displays, the monumental tree, the Swings of the Stars, and a calendar of concerts and shows in the historic centre of Monopoli, but details will be confirmed by the organisers in the weeks leading up to the event.
By car: Monopoli is served by the SS16 Adriatica road; there is ample parking available towards the historic centre. By train: Monopoli station is on the Bari–Lecce Adriatic line, just a few minutes' walk from the centre. Nearest airport: Bari–Palese (Karol Wojtyła), about 50 km away.
Admission to the Christmas park and most events is free. Some services, such as the ice skating rink, require a fee. The full schedule and calendar are published on the Municipality of Monopoli website and the event's social media channels.
The Christmas period is very busy: we recommend visiting the park during the early evening hours on weekdays to avoid the crowds. Wear comfortable, warm clothing for walks along the illuminated route spread between the historic centre and the seafront.
