About Illica Sheep Festival

Every summer, the Illica Sheep Festival brings life to the small village of Illica, in the municipality of Accumoli. Located in the far north of the Rieti province, in the heart of the Laga Mountains, this event is organized by the Illica Association. It blends devotion to Saint Vincent Ferrer with a revival of the region's pastoral culinary heritage, featuring signature dishes like 'pecora al callaro', arrosticini, fresh ricotta, and locally sourced cheeses. Since the 2016 earthquake, this community gathering has become a powerful symbol of rebirth and a deep connection to local roots.

The Illica Sheep Festival

Every summer, the small village of Illica, in the municipality of Accumoli, in the northern reaches of the Rieti province, comes alive for the Sheep Festival. Situated along the Via Salaria, at the foot of the Laga Mountains and on the border between Lazio, Umbria, Marche, and Abruzzo, Illica is a tiny hamlet that reunites its community for this special day, welcoming residents, those who have moved away, and families returning for the occasion.

Faith and Pastoral Tradition

The festival stems from the devotion to Saint Vincent Ferrer, the village's patron saint, and is organized by the Illica Association. The morning begins with a solemn mass in honor of the saint; at noon, spirituality gives way to conviviality as the festival officially kicks off, celebrating the pastoral cuisine of this corner of the Lazio Apennines.

The Flavors of the Laga

The undisputed star is sheep, prepared according to traditional recipes: pecora al callaro, slow-cooked in a large copper cauldron, mezze maniche pasta with sheep ragรน, arrosticini, and grilled meats. The menu also features fresh ricotta, locally sourced cheeses, craft beer from Accumoli, and gelato from Amatrice. The dishes are prepared in collaboration with chefs from the Italian Federation of Chefs.

A Festival of Rebirth

Following the 2016 earthquake that devastated Accumoli and the entire Laga area, the Sheep Festival has taken on a significance beyond gastronomy: it has become a symbol of rebirth and an opportunity to keep the bond with one's roots alive. The event is part of the broader Laga Rural Villages Festival, recognized as a best practice for sustainable territorial development.

Culture and Community

The day is accompanied by live folk music and, for the occasion, the extraordinary opening of the small museum of peasant arts and traditions, which is open to visitors. The Illica Sheep Festival remains one of the most cherished summer events in the Accumoli area, capturing the identity of a mountain community in Lazio through food and celebration.
