The 'Lu 'Nzite' chestnut festival in the village of Senarica, nestled within the Gran Sasso chestnut groves

The Senarica Chestnut Festival is one of the most cherished autumn events in the Teramo region. It takes place in the village of Senarica, a tiny hamlet in the municipality of Crognaleto, in the province of Teramo, deep in the heart of the Abruzzo mountains and within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. Organized by the Pro Loco of Senarica APS, the event draws the local community and many former residents who return to the village to honor their roots.
The undisputed star is Lu 'Nzite, the prized Senarica chestnut, renowned throughout Italy for its sweetness and quality. Along the streets of the historic center, you will find food stalls serving traditional chestnut-based dishes, arrosticini, desserts, roasted chestnuts, wine, and beer. The festival is also an opportunity to rediscover the historical and economic importance of the chestnut groves, the true guardians of the landscape and identity of this mountain corner.
The program blends gastronomy, live music, performances, and guided hikes through the chestnut woods. There are also sports tournaments, exhibitions, family entertainment, and the presentation of the "Lu 'Nzite d'Oro" award, given to those who distinguish themselves in their commitment to mountain communities. In recent years, the festival has also become a showcase for the Living Gran Sasso project, dedicated to the development and revitalization of the Apennine inland areas.
Senarica is no ordinary village: tradition holds that it was once an ancient autonomous "republic", with a legendary history dating back to the Middle Ages and an ancient bond with the Most Serene Republic of Venice. This unique past adds charm to any visit and makes the Chestnut Festival a perfect occasion to discover a little-known but fascinating piece of inland Abruzzo.
Between stone alleys, glowing fireplaces, and stalls laden with local products, the Senarica Chestnut Festival offers an authentic experience far from mass tourism. It is the perfect invitation to stroll through autumn chestnut groves, savor traditional Abruzzese cuisine, and experience the genuine hospitality of a small mountain village.
