About Feast of Saint Joseph of Leonessa

Every year, around the second Sunday of September, Leonessa dresses up to honor its patron saint, Saint Joseph of Leonessa. For four days, this village in the province of Rieti alternates liturgical celebrations in the Church of San Francesco with a solemn procession carrying the Saint's Heart Relic, concerts in Piazza VII Aprile, fireworks, and local gastronomic specialties. It is one of the most heartfelt traditions in upper Lazio, where the sacred and the profane have coexisted for centuries.

The Patron Saint of Leonessa

Saint Joseph of Leonessa (1556-1612), a Capuchin friar born in this very village in upper Lazio, is the town's patron saint and one of the most revered figures in the province of Rieti. His liturgical day falls on February 4th, but the Leonessa community long ago chose to hold the civil and religious festivities during the most favorable season: the second Sunday of September, when the plateau's climate is still mild and the town can welcome emigrants returning for the occasion.

Four days between liturgy and the piazza

The spiritual heart of the festival is the Church of San Francesco, which hosts the full liturgical calendar: every afternoon, usually starting at 5:00 PM, the Holy Rosary, Holy Mass, and the Triduum in preparation for the solemn day take place. Sunday is the culmination, with the Solemn Mass in the morning presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Rieti and, in the late afternoon, the procession through the streets of the historic center, during which the Relic of the Saint's Heart is paraded, followed by confraternities, civil authorities, and a large crowd.

The procession is accompanied by the presentation of the "Monti Frumentari" Prize, an award linked to the history of the ancient Leonessa agricultural credit institutions, and the final blessing of the community.

The civil side: music, sports, and fireworks

Alongside the devotional dimension, the festivities retain a robust popular spirit. The civil program, organized by the Municipality of Leonessa together with local associations, has historically included daytime cycling races and motor competitions, theatrical performances, dance evenings, and above all, the evening concerts in Piazza VII Aprile, the porticoed living room that serves as the true center of gravity for the village. In the 2025 edition, the closing was entrusted to the Orchestra Popolare del Saltarello, a group that brings the traditional repertoire of Central Italy to the stage.

There is also the midnight fireworks display, traditionally awaited by the whole town, which closes the most intense day by illuminating the roofs of the historic center and the surrounding mountains.

The flavors of the festival

The festival is also a gastronomic event. Among the stalls and makeshift kitchens along the village streets, one can find typical products of the Leonessa plateau: the famous Leonessa potato, mountain cured meats and cheeses, and homemade desserts. However, the porchetta sandwich remains the undisputed icon of the festivities, enjoyed standing between one concert and another, as local custom dictates.

Leonessa, a village of art between Lazio and Umbria

Located at an altitude of about 970 meters in the province of Rieti, at the foot of Monte Terminillo and a few kilometers from the Umbrian border, Leonessa is one of the most elegant villages in inland Lazio: 14th-century porticoes, Gothic churches, stone palaces, and an urban fabric that has remained almost intact. Participating in the patron saint's festival means discovering the town at its moment of greatest vitality, when houses reopen, families reunite, and the community showcases its identity.

An identity that endures

As local chronicles recount, the mixing of the sacred and the profane is not an anomaly but a constitutive characteristic of this festival: devotion to the Capuchin Saint coexists with the village fair, the procession precedes the concert, and prayer gives way to dance. It is this dual nature that makes the September event one of the most authentic in the entire Rieti province.
