Verdi's opera under the stars in Piazza Dante, Grosseto
In the heart of the Maremma's historic capital, Piazza Dante Alighieri transforms into an evocative open-air theatre to host Giuseppe Verdi's Il Trovatore, one of the most frequently performed and cherished works in the entire operatic repertoire. The monumental setting of the square, overlooking the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the Palazzo della Provincia, lends the evening a unique charm, where music, architecture, and summer atmosphere blend to offer the audience a memorable experience.
Composed by Verdi in 1853 with a libretto by Salvadore Cammarano, Il Trovatore is a drama of extreme passions, set in 15th-century Spain amidst wars, vendettas, and star-crossed love. The story intertwines the fates of the troubadour Manrico, the noblewoman Leonora, the Count di Luna, and the gypsy Azucena in a dramatic crescendo marked by some of the most famous passages in all of Italian opera, such as the Anvil Chorus («Vedi! le fosche notturne spoglie») and the «Di quella pira».
Interpreting Verdi's score is the Grosseto Symphony Orchestra, an ensemble founded in 1994 and a cornerstone of the musical life in the Maremma region, under the guidance of conductor Damiano Tognetti. Active year-round with chamber and symphonic concerts, the orchestra has long enlivened major civic events and summer evenings in the city's squares, contributing significantly to the promotion of musical culture in the Municipality of Grosseto and the entire province.
The operatic performance in Piazza Dante has become a cherished tradition for both locals and the many tourists who visit the Tuscan Maremma in summer. The open-air opera offers an opportunity to introduce even the less experienced audience to melodrama in an informal yet artistically high-level setting. The event is part of the capital's summer music programme, which features various titles from the great operatic repertoire throughout July.
As the capital of the province of the same name in Tuscany, Grosseto preserves one of the best-maintained historic centres in the region, enclosed within the imposing hexagonal Medici walls. An evening at the opera in Piazza Dante is also the perfect opportunity to discover the city, stroll along the ramparts, and immerse yourself in the flavours and landscapes of the Maremma, with its rolling hills, natural parks, and stretches of the Tyrrhenian coast.
