The Castellaneta Lenten Calzone Competition
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Castellaneta, in the heart of the Taranto province, spring brings a delicious event deeply rooted in local culture: Il Calzonissimo – Calzone Festival. This culinary competition centers on the Lenten calzone, a unique sweet-and-savory dish that has been a staple of the Puglian culinary tradition for generations, representing a true piece of local intangible heritage.
The event is promoted by the Pro Loco Castellaneta «Domenica Terrusi» in collaboration with the «Mauro Perrone» Higher Education Institute, which opens its teaching restaurant to host both contestants and the public. The synergy between the local tourism association and the school gives the initiative a strong educational and community value: on one hand, it promotes an iconic recipe, and on the other, it engages young people in discovering traditional flavors.
The competition is divided into two distinct sections, designed to bridge memory and experimentation:
Individual contestants can participate in one or both categories, while groups must compete in both challenges. Entries are judged by a panel of food experts, who determine the winners based on taste, technique, and faithfulness to tradition.
Through its competitive format, Il Calzonissimo is not just a moment of celebration and conviviality, but also a tool for protecting and passing on culinary knowledge that might otherwise be lost. The Lenten calzone thus becomes a symbol of the deep bond between Castellaneta, its community, and the entire Puglia region. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced; however, the event is expected to take place in the spring, near Lent, as per established tradition.
Information regarding the 2026 edition of Il Calzonissimo will be released by the organizers in the months leading up to the event. The festival is expected to feature the competition dedicated to the Castellaneta Lenten calzone, divided into Tradition and Innovation categories, with individual and group entries judged by a panel of food experts. Exact dates have not yet been announced.
The event takes place at the IISS «Mauro Perrone» in Castellaneta, on Via Spineto Montecamplo, in the province of Taranto.
Castellaneta can be reached by car via the SS7 Appia and SS106 Jonica roads; the Castellaneta train station is served by the Taranto–Metaponto line. The nearest airport is Bari-Palese, about an hour and a half away by car.
