About Il Calzonissimo

Il Calzonissimo is a culinary competition dedicated to the Lenten calzone of Castellaneta, in the province of Taranto. Launched in 2025 by the Pro Loco Castellaneta «Domenica Terrusi» in partnership with the «Mauro Perrone» Higher Education Institute, the event celebrates a sweet-and-savory dish that is a cornerstone of Puglia's intangible heritage. The challenge features two categories, Tradition and Innovation, with a panel of food experts judging the best interpretations of this iconic recipe.

Il Calzonissimo, the Lenten Calzone Festival

In Castellaneta, in the heart of the Taranto province, spring brings a delicious event deeply rooted in local culture: Il Calzonissimo – Calzone Festival. This culinary competition centers on the Lenten calzone, a unique sweet-and-savory dish that has been a staple of the Puglian culinary tradition for generations, representing a true piece of local intangible heritage.

A Community-Driven Initiative

The event is promoted by the Pro Loco Castellaneta «Domenica Terrusi» in collaboration with the «Mauro Perrone» Higher Education Institute, which opens its teaching restaurant to host both contestants and the public. The synergy between the local tourism association and the school gives the initiative a strong educational and community value: on one hand, it promotes an iconic recipe, and on the other, it engages young people in discovering traditional flavors.

The Two Competition Categories

The competition is divided into two distinct sections, designed to bridge memory and experimentation:

  • Traditional Calzone: dedicated to the classic recipe, using sponsali (local spring onions) and the typical ingredients that define the Castellaneta Lenten calzone.
  • Innovative Calzone: open to new doughs and fillings, allowing for the introduction of ingredients from other parts of Puglia and original reinterpretations.

Individual contestants can participate in one or both categories, while groups must compete in both challenges. Entries are judged by a panel of food experts, who determine the winners based on taste, technique, and faithfulness to tradition.

A Heritage to Preserve

Through its competitive format, Il Calzonissimo is not just a moment of celebration and conviviality, but also a tool for protecting and passing on culinary knowledge that might otherwise be lost. The Lenten calzone thus becomes a symbol of the deep bond between Castellaneta, its community, and the entire Puglia region. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced; however, the event is expected to take place in the spring, near Lent, as per established tradition.

Il Calzonissimo — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Il Calzonissimo in Castellaneta is expected to take place in the spring, in keeping with the Lenten tradition. At the moment, official dates and the program have not yet been announced by the Pro Loco Castellaneta «Domenica Terrusi» and the «Mauro Perrone» Institute.
