The Canelli Carnival on the Piazza Gancia ice rink
In Canelli, located in the heart of the Asti region and nestled among the UNESCO-listed hills of Monferrato, Carnival takes on an original form: the Ice Carnival. Centered around the winter ice rink set up in Piazza Gancia, the event transforms the town center into an open-air stage where traditional carnival spirit meets the thrill of the ice. It is an afternoon designed especially for children and families, drawing hundreds of masked revelers to the square.
The event is organized by the Comitato Palio Città di Canelli, the group that carries the town's colors to the Palio di Asti, in collaboration with the Pro Loco Città di Canelli. The connection to the Palio world is evident in the event's staging: the festivities open with the entrance of the Princesses of the Associazione Colline and the Masche of the Comitato Palio, accompanied by the Tamburi dell'Associazione Tamburi Canelli, who set the rhythm for the celebration.
The heart of the day is the ice show, featuring figure skating performances, spins, and choreography by local skaters. Around the rink in Piazza Gancia, activities for children take place throughout the day:
The ice rink remains available to families, teenagers, and enthusiasts of all ages throughout most of the winter season, and the Ice Carnival represents its most spectacular and popular moment.
The event takes place in Canelli, in the Province of Asti, Piedmont: a city world-famous for its Underground Cathedrals and the sparkling wine tradition of Asti and Moscato. Experiencing the Ice Carnival is also a chance to discover this corner of Monferrato, where popular festivities become an opportunity for people of all ages to gather in the square.
The February 15, 2026 edition kicked off at 3:00 PM in Piazza Gancia. The festivities opened with the entrance of the Princesses of the Associazione Colline and the Masche of the Comitato Palio, preceded by the Tamburi dell'Associazione Tamburi Canelli.
The highlight was the ice show featuring local skater Camilla Montaldo, who performed highly acclaimed spins and routines. For children, there was face painting, inflatables, and slides, while the Pro Loco Città di Canelli offered cotton candy. In the evening, the ice rink remained open to the public. The day, favored by beautiful weather, saw the square filled with children and families celebrating.
The Ice Carnival is held in Piazza Gancia, in the center of Canelli (AT), around the winter ice rink.
