Artistic bonfires, local flavors, and tradition on the feast of St. Anthony Abbot
Every year on January 17th, the day dedicated to St. Anthony Abbot, the small village of Alberona, in the province of Foggia, celebrates «I Foche de Sant'Antone», the traditional St. Anthony's Bonfires. It is one of the most cherished events in the Monti Dauni, the mountainous area of northern Puglia where the cult of fire is deeply rooted in ancient folk religion.
Preparation begins in the morning, around 9:00 AM: in the alleys, open spaces, and squares of the historic center, residents build true wood sculptures—the artistic bonfires. In the late afternoon, around 6:00 PM, a judging committee tours the village to evaluate the most beautiful compositions. Only after the judges have passed are the piles lit, transforming Alberona into a scene of dozens of fires burning late into the night.
The ritual of conviviality is renewed around the flames. Tastings feature dishes from the rustic cuisine of the Monti Dauni, almost all based on pork:
The food, shared outdoors around the fire, becomes an integral part of the ritual and tells the story of the gastronomic identity of this corner of Puglia.
The evening is enlivened by folk songs and dances, musical performances, stilt walkers, and jugglers, often concluding with spectacular fireworks. The bonfire judged the most beautiful is awarded half a pig, while the second and third place winners receive a leg and the head of the animal, respectively, following a custom that links play, community, and gastronomic culture.
The festival is linked to the figure of St. Anthony Abbot, protector of animals and, according to tradition, healer of shingles, which is not coincidentally called «St. Anthony's fire» in Italian. The lighting of the bonfires symbolically marks the beginning of the Carnival period and represents a moment of strong identity for the Alberona community.
The event is organized by the Municipality of Alberona in collaboration with the BellaVita Eventi agency of Nicola Talienti and the Pro Loco of Alberona, confirming every year the village's role as a symbolic place for fire traditions in Puglia.
The 2026 edition of «I Foche de Sant'Antone» returned to Alberona on Saturday, January 17th, on the feast of St. Anthony Abbot. As per tradition, the preparation of the artistic bonfires began in the morning, while in the late afternoon, the judging committee toured the village to evaluate the most beautiful wood sculptures before lighting.
As night fell, dozens of fires illuminated the alleys and squares of the historic center. Around the flames, the community shared dishes from the rustic cuisine of the Monti Dauni—beans with pork rinds, pizza with cracklings, and sausage—accompanied by new wine, amidst folk songs and dances. The initiative was promoted by the Municipality of Alberona with BellaVita Eventi and the Pro Loco of Alberona.
Alberona is located in the Monti Dauni, in the province of Foggia. By car, it can be reached from the Foggia exit (A14 motorway), continuing towards Lucera and the Monti Dauni. The nearest train station is Foggia, from where you can continue by car or local bus.
The festival takes place every year on January 17th, the feast day of St. Anthony Abbot. The bonfires are lit in the evening, between 6:00 PM and 7:30 PM.
The event takes place outdoors in the historic center and is free to attend. Tastings of traditional dishes are available for purchase at the village's food stalls.
