Passion processions in the historic center of Cerignola
In Cerignola, a populous town in the province of Foggia, nestled in the heart of Puglia and the fertile Tavoliere plain, Holy Week is the most heartfelt moment of the religious year. For a few days, the historic center transforms into a grand theater of faith: the main streets fill with silent worshippers, the sound of funeral marches accompanies the statues along the route, and religious and popular traditions become one. It is a devotion rooted for centuries, renewed every year with the same intensity.
The heart of the rites is Good Friday, marked by three processions. In the morning, the procession of the "Mysteries" departs from the Church of the Addolorata: statues depicting the Stations of the Cross traverse the city streets with a long stop in front of the Cathedral. In the evening, around 7:30 PM, the Desolata procession sets out from the Mother Church, evoking Mary's deepest sorrow before the death of her Son, amidst prayers and funeral music.
Late in the evening, it is time for the Way of the Cross of the Dead Christ, which starts and ends at the Church of the Purgatory: the statue of the Dead Christ is carried through the streets of the center in an atmosphere of silence and contemplation, with the Stations of the Passion experienced with great participation. It is the most moving moment, capable of stirring deep emotion among those present.
Holy Saturday opens with one of the city's most recognizable processions: that of Santa Maria della Pietà, which departs in the early morning hours from the Church of Sant'Antonio. Its most distinctive feature is the female participation: the statues depicting female figures are carried exclusively by the women of the confraternity, while the men are reserved for carrying the Madonna and the role of accompanying as pallbearers. A strong sign of devotion and identity that makes this procession a symbol of the anticipation of Easter.
The Holy Week Rites of Cerignola are not just a liturgical appointment, but an identity heritage that involves local confraternities, parishes, and the entire community. The celebrations intertwine with the Bishop's calendar in the Cathedral, from Palm Sunday to the Easter Vigil, and see a large and composed turnout every year. Silence, contemplation, and the notes of the bands accompany a journey that unites different generations around the same gestures handed down through time.
The Cerignola processions fit into the rich panorama of Holy Week in Puglia, among the most famous in Italy, from Taranto to Gallipoli. In Cerignola, this legacy takes on its own traits, linked to the historic churches of the center and local confraternities. Attending the rites means coming into contact with the most authentic soul of the Municipality of Cerignola and the Capitanata, where faith becomes a sober and collective spectacle, capable of bringing the city to a standstill to gather around the mystery of the Passion.
Good Friday, April 3: in the morning, the procession of the Mysteries from the Church of the Addolorata, with a stop in front of the Cathedral. In the evening, from approximately 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM, the Desolata procession from the Mother Church. Late in the evening, the Way of the Cross of the Dead Christ, starting and ending at the Church of the Purgatory, concluding around 11:30 PM.

Cerignola is easily accessible by car from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (Cerignola Est exit) and the A14 Adriatic motorway. By train, the reference station is Cerignola Campagna, on the Bologna-Bari line, connected to the center by shuttles and buses. The nearest airports are Bari-Palese and Foggia-Gino Lisa.
The processions take place in the historic center and participation is free and open to all. During the parades, there are traffic restrictions along the route: it is recommended to park in areas outside the center and reach the churches on foot. Clothing appropriate for a religious context is recommended.
