Passion rites featuring processions, sacred statues, and the meeting of the Addolorata
In the heart of the province of Agrigento, the town of Canicattì experiences one of the most intense events in its civil and religious calendar every spring: Holy Week. For the people of Canicattì, this is not merely a liturgical celebration, but an identity-defining heritage passed down through generations, where confraternities, parishes, and the entire community gather around the statues of the Passion of Christ.
The devotional journey revolves around a procession of highly venerated statues: the Christ with the Cross, the Dead Christ, the Risen Christ, the Addolorata (Our Lady of Sorrows), Saint John, and Mary Magdalene. The functions are centered at the Church of San Diego on Corso Umberto I, from which the main processions depart and return, traversing the streets of the historic center.
In addition to the Church of San Diego, the rites involve the Calvary, Piazza IV Novembre (the heart of the Meeting), and numerous other sacred buildings in the town, including the Church of the Holy Family and the churches of San Biagio, Santo Spirito, SS. Redentore, and San Giuseppe.
Together with the great Easter celebrations of nearby Caltanissetta and other centers on the island, the Canicattì Holy Week is a full-fledged part of the rich landscape of Passion rites in Sicily, an expression of popular religiosity that weaves together faith, sacred art, and community identity. The organization is managed by the San Diego Parish together with the Good Friday Committee, with the support of parish associations and local volunteers.
The rites of the 2026 Canicattì Holy Week kicked off on the evening of March 27 with the city's Via Crucis, led by the Holy Cross of the Giovaninfesta group and marked by the meeting of the statues of the Addolorata, Mary Magdalene, and Saint John, before a large crowd of faithful despite the cold weather.
On March 31, Tuesday of Holy Week, after the Eucharistic celebration, the statue of the Dead Christ left the Church of San Diego and, accompanied in procession along the Via Crucis, was taken to the Calvary chapel, where it remained until Good Friday. The culminating day of Good Friday, April 3, featured the rites of the Crucifixion, the Scinnenza, and the Spartenza, while Easter Sunday, April 5, celebrated the Resurrection with the Meeting between the Risen Christ, the Madonna, and Saint John.
Canicattì is located in the province of Agrigento. By car, it can be reached via the SS 640 Agrigento-Caltanissetta road. The Canicattì railway station is an important hub of the Sicilian network, with connections to Agrigento, Caltanissetta, and Catania. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa.
The rites take place in the historic center, with the epicenter at the Church of San Diego (Corso Umberto I, 118), Piazza IV Novembre, and the Calvary. Access to the processions is free. For Good Friday, it is recommended to arrive early.
