About Canicattì Holy Week

The Holy Week of Canicattì is one of the most deeply felt religious celebrations in the province of Agrigento. For over a week, from the opening Via Crucis to the Easter Meeting, the town's historic center transforms into a grand devotional stage: processions of sacred statues, the solemn transfer of the Dead Christ to the Calvary, the rites of the Scinnenza and the Spartenza on Good Friday, and finally, the joy of the Resurrection. A popular tradition deeply rooted in the identity of this Sicilian town.

The Holy Week of Canicattì

In the heart of the province of Agrigento, the town of Canicattì experiences one of the most intense events in its civil and religious calendar every spring: Holy Week. For the people of Canicattì, this is not merely a liturgical celebration, but an identity-defining heritage passed down through generations, where confraternities, parishes, and the entire community gather around the statues of the Passion of Christ.

The rites and sacred statues

The devotional journey revolves around a procession of highly venerated statues: the Christ with the Cross, the Dead Christ, the Risen Christ, the Addolorata (Our Lady of Sorrows), Saint John, and Mary Magdalene. The functions are centered at the Church of San Diego on Corso Umberto I, from which the main processions depart and return, traversing the streets of the historic center.

  • Holy Thursday: Evening mass with the washing of the feet, the setting up of the Altars of Repose and the traditional "Sepulcri," adorned with wheat sprouts and "Barcu" flowers.
  • Good Friday: The highlight of the week. The procession moves from the Church of San Diego, featuring the "Meeting" of the Addolorata with Christ along the way; at the Calvary, the Crucifixion takes place, followed by the rite of the Scinnenza (the deposition from the cross) and, late in the evening, the Spartenza, with the urn entering the church around midnight.
  • Easter Sunday: The "Easter Meeting," where the Risen Christ meets the Madonna and Saint John, accompanied by a marching band and fireworks that transform the sorrow of mourning into the celebration of the Resurrection.

Places of devotion

In addition to the Church of San Diego, the rites involve the Calvary, Piazza IV Novembre (the heart of the Meeting), and numerous other sacred buildings in the town, including the Church of the Holy Family and the churches of San Biagio, Santo Spirito, SS. Redentore, and San Giuseppe.

A Sicilian heritage

Together with the great Easter celebrations of nearby Caltanissetta and other centers on the island, the Canicattì Holy Week is a full-fledged part of the rich landscape of Passion rites in Sicily, an expression of popular religiosity that weaves together faith, sacred art, and community identity. The organization is managed by the San Diego Parish together with the Good Friday Committee, with the support of parish associations and local volunteers.

Canicattì Holy Week — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Canicattì Holy Week opened on Friday, March 27, with the city's Via Crucis and the meeting of the Addolorata, Magdalene, and Saint John. The rites continued with the transfer of the Dead Christ to the Calvary, leading up to Good Friday on April 3 and the Easter Meeting on April 5.

The rites of the 2026 Canicattì Holy Week kicked off on the evening of March 27 with the city's Via Crucis, led by the Holy Cross of the Giovaninfesta group and marked by the meeting of the statues of the Addolorata, Mary Magdalene, and Saint John, before a large crowd of faithful despite the cold weather.

On March 31, Tuesday of Holy Week, after the Eucharistic celebration, the statue of the Dead Christ left the Church of San Diego and, accompanied in procession along the Via Crucis, was taken to the Calvary chapel, where it remained until Good Friday. The culminating day of Good Friday, April 3, featured the rites of the Crucifixion, the Scinnenza, and the Spartenza, while Easter Sunday, April 5, celebrated the Resurrection with the Meeting between the Risen Christ, the Madonna, and Saint John.
