Nestled on a hill overlooking the Belice Valley, Salemi is one of the most fascinating towns in the province of Trapani, in Sicily. Listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy, its historic center becomes the stage for one of the region's most intense religious traditions during Holy Week: a week of processions, solemn liturgies, and popular devotion that involves the entire community.
The journey toward Easter begins on Palm Sunday, when the blessing of the palms and the re-enactment of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem take place in Piazza Libertร . Holy Thursday is dedicated to the Chrism Mass in the Cathedral and, in the evening, the Mass of the Lord's Supper with the rite of the Washing of the Feet and nocturnal adoration at the altars of repose, carefully set up in the town's churches.
The climax arrives on Good Friday: after the Liturgy of the Cross in the afternoon, the evocative procession of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows begins. The statues are carried slowly through the alleys of the historic center on the shoulders of confraternities in traditional attire, accompanied by the sound of bands and the quiet reflection of the faithful. The procession concludes at the Mother Church with the traditional rite of kissing the feet of the Christ. Holy Saturday culminates in the solemn Easter Vigil, which announces the Resurrection.
Salemi's devotion during the Lenten and Easter period is inseparable from the famous tradition of the St. Joseph's Breads, which transforms the town into an open-air museum of finely crafted votive breads and home altars every March 19th. A manifestation of faith and folk art that, together with the Holy Week rites, tells the deep soul of this Belice Valley community.
Experiencing Holy Week in Salemi also means discovering a village rich in history, from the Norman-Swabian Castle to the ruins of the Mother Church, a symbol of the rebirth after the 1968 earthquake. The processions wind through an urban setting of rare beauty, where stone, faith, and tradition merge into an authentic experience of the truest Sicily.
The 2026 Holy Week celebrations in Salemi will follow the usual liturgical sequence: blessing of the palms in Piazza Libertร , Holy Thursday rites, the procession of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows on Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. The exact dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published: for updated information, it is advisable to follow the channels of the Municipality of Salemi and local parishes in the weeks leading up to Easter.
