About A Cunnutta

Every spring, Montemaggiore Belsito in the province of Palermo revives one of the most deeply felt religious traditions in the Madonie mountains: Holy Week, culminating in the evocative Good Friday procession known as "A Cunnutta". Between Palm Sunday and the Easter Vigil, the entire community gathers at the Mother Church of Sant'Agata and along the streets of the historic center in a journey of faith, silence, and popular devotion that weaves together liturgy, song, and ancient Sicilian customs.

Holy Week in Montemaggiore Belsito

In the heart of the Madonie, the town of Montemaggiore Belsito (Palermo province, Sicily) preserves one of the most intense religious observances in its calendar: Holy Week. Organized by the Sant'Agata V.M. Parish, the week leading up to Easter transforms the village into a place of reflection and collective participation, where liturgical rites blend with Sicilian popular traditions passed down through generations.

A Cunnutta: The Good Friday Procession

The most anticipated and evocative moment is the Good Friday procession, known by its local dialect name "A Cunnutta". After gathering in the church in a spirit of prayer, the community accompanies the Dead Christ in procession, carried on the shoulders of local youths dressed in dark suits, followed by the Madonna Addolorata (Our Lady of Sorrows) with her sweet, sorrowful face, carried by the Circolineโ€”women dressed in black. The procession winds through the town center accompanied by the moving chants of the local marching band, while church bells remain silent in mourning: a touching atmosphere that deeply moves both the faithful and visitors.

The Rites of the Week

The devotional journey unfolds throughout the week leading up to Easter:

  • Palm Sunday: The blessing of palms and olive branches commemorates Jesus' solemn entry into Jerusalem.
  • Stations of the Cross: During the middle of the week, the Via Crucis takes place along the town streets.
  • Maundy Thursday: The Mass of the Lord's Supper recalls the Last Supper, followed by the traditional visit to the "sepolcri" (altars of repose) set up for the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
  • Good Friday: The climax with the Dead Christ procession, "A Cunnutta".
  • Holy Saturday: A day of silence and anticipation, culminating in the solemn Easter Vigil and the announcement of the Resurrection.

A Madonie Tradition

More than just a liturgical appointment, the Holy Week of Montemaggiore Belsito is a spiritual and communal journey that unites entire generations around faith and Sicilian folklore. The participation of the confraternities, the role of the Circoline, and the accompaniment of the marching band make these days an identity-defining heritage for the entire town, capable of moving even first-time observers. The festival traditionally concludes with the Easter lunch and typical Sicilian dishes, completing a cycle that leads from the sorrow of Good Friday to the joy of the Resurrection.
