The Easter processions of Canosa, blending popular devotion with traditional Lecce papier-mâché statues
The Holy Week in Canosa di Puglia, located in the heart of the Barletta-Andria-Trani (BAT) province in Puglia, is much more than a series of religious celebrations: it is the very soul of the city brought to life. For an entire week, the historic center of Canosa transforms into a grand open-air sacred theater, where centuries-old processions, liturgical chants, and ancient funeral marches guide the community from the sorrow of the Passion to the joy of the Resurrection.
The power of these rites lies in their authenticity: these are not performances staged for tourism, but a tradition born and lived within the community, passed down from generation to generation by local parishes, associations, and confraternities.
The spiritual journey of Canosa's Holy Week is marked by several fundamental events:
Alongside the processions, the program includes the Living Passion on the Historic Hill of the Forty Martyrs in the Castle area, concerts dedicated to the Hymn of the Desolata featuring the "Enzo de Muro Lomanto" Philharmonic Choir and the "Nino Rota" Orchestra, and the celebration of the Resurrection enriched by Canosa vernacular poetry. The week concludes the following Sunday with the Procession of the First Fruits of the Earth dedicated to Maria SS. della Fonte.
The Holy Week in Canosa di Puglia is promoted by the Settimana Santa Canosa Cultural Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Canosa di Puglia and with the support of the Puglia Region, the BAT Province, and Puglia Promozione. The processions are followed every year by thousands of faithful and curious visitors, with live video coverage on official social media channels and, recently, a QR code that allows followers to track the route of the processions in real time.
The 2026 Holy Week in Canosa di Puglia offered the usual rich calendar of rites, celebrations, and cultural events, with the official poster created by artist Paolo Partipilo (fourth edition). The processions, also followed via live streaming on official channels, accompanied the Canosa community from Passion Friday to the Resurrection. A new feature of recent editions, a QR code on the flyer and parking restriction signs, allowed for real-time tracking of the procession routes.
Canosa di Puglia is located in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani (BAT), in Puglia. By car, it is accessible via the A14 motorway (Canosa-Andria exit) and the SS 93 road. The Canosa di Puglia train station is served by regional lines; convenient alternatives include the Barletta and Andria stations, which are connected by bus.
The processions take place in the historic center of Canosa, departing from the San Sabino Co-Cathedral, the Maria SS. del Carmelo Church, and the SS. Francesco e Biagio Church. Events are concentrated during Holy Week (March-April), following the Easter calendar.
Participation in all processions and events is free. During the processions, parking restrictions are in effect along the route.
