About Holy Week Canosa

The Holy Week in Canosa di Puglia is one of the most intense and authentic Easter traditions in the Barletta-Andria-Trani province. Born from and preserved by the local community, it fills the historic center between Passion Friday and Easter Sunday with solemn processions, ancient wooden and Lecce papier-mâché statues, black-clad female choirs, and poignant funeral marches. From the Procession of Our Lady of Sorrows to the Mysteries of Good Friday, and the moving Procession of the Desolata on Holy Saturday morning, every event is a moment of silence, devotion, and collective memory.

An Easter of tradition and devotion in Canosa di Puglia

The Holy Week in Canosa di Puglia, located in the heart of the Barletta-Andria-Trani (BAT) province in Puglia, is much more than a series of religious celebrations: it is the very soul of the city brought to life. For an entire week, the historic center of Canosa transforms into a grand open-air sacred theater, where centuries-old processions, liturgical chants, and ancient funeral marches guide the community from the sorrow of the Passion to the joy of the Resurrection.

The power of these rites lies in their authenticity: these are not performances staged for tourism, but a tradition born and lived within the community, passed down from generation to generation by local parishes, associations, and confraternities.

The Great Processions

The spiritual journey of Canosa's Holy Week is marked by several fundamental events:

  • Procession of Our Lady of Sorrows (Addolorata) — on Passion Friday, the wooden statue of the Virgin of Sorrows departs from the San Sabino Co-Cathedral, accompanied by the moving Hymn to the Madonna of Tears.
  • Procession of the Mysteries — on Good Friday, the ancient Lecce papier-mâché statues depicting the stages of the Passion parade from the Maria SS. del Carmelo parish church: Jesus in the Garden, Ecce Homo, the Scourging of Jesus, Jesus to Calvary, Veronica, Calvary, the Dead Christ, and the Addolorata, with the relic of the Holy Wood of the Cross closing the procession.
  • Procession of the Desolata — on the morning of Holy Saturday, this is the most defining rite: women dressed in black with their faces covered hold hands, "linked like a chain," singing the Hymn of the Desolata, sharing in the Mother's mourning. The statue depicts the Madonna wrapped in mourning clothes, with a silver sword piercing her heart to symbolize the prophecy of old Simeon.

Music, Poetry, and Sacred Representations

Alongside the processions, the program includes the Living Passion on the Historic Hill of the Forty Martyrs in the Castle area, concerts dedicated to the Hymn of the Desolata featuring the "Enzo de Muro Lomanto" Philharmonic Choir and the "Nino Rota" Orchestra, and the celebration of the Resurrection enriched by Canosa vernacular poetry. The week concludes the following Sunday with the Procession of the First Fruits of the Earth dedicated to Maria SS. della Fonte.

A Heritage of the Canosa Community

The Holy Week in Canosa di Puglia is promoted by the Settimana Santa Canosa Cultural Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Canosa di Puglia and with the support of the Puglia Region, the BAT Province, and Puglia Promozione. The processions are followed every year by thousands of faithful and curious visitors, with live video coverage on official social media channels and, recently, a QR code that allows followers to track the route of the processions in real time.
