Good Friday processions in the historic center of Bisceglie
The Holy Week in Bisceglie, in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani (Puglia), is among the most intense and well-attended celebrations on the Apulian Adriatic coast. Every Good Friday, the city's historic center transforms into a grand stage for popular faith: the local confraternities carry the statues of the Passion in procession, following a ceremonial passed down through generations. It is a moment of collective reflection that involves thousands of faithful, confreres in traditional attire, and visitors.
The day begins at dawn with the Procession of the Addolorata, when the statue of the mourning Madonna silently traverses the still-dark city streets. In the morning, the most moving moment takes place: the Rite of the Meeting. The statues of Jesus carrying the Cross and the Addolorata Madonna slowly approach each other under the emotional gaze of the crowd gathered behind the barriers, representing the final encounter between mother and son before Calvary.
The evening is dedicated to the evocative Procession of the Mysteries: nine statues from the Bisceglie confraternities, each depicting an episode of Christ's Passion—from the agony in the Garden of Olives to the Pietà—are carried on shoulders by the confreres along the main streets of the center, accompanied by the Gran Concerto Bandistico Città di Bisceglie. The procession concludes with the deposition of the dead Christ and the city's Via Crucis.
The rite is brought to life by the city's ancient religious associations, including the Archconfraternity of San Giuseppe, the Archconfraternity of the Madonna Addolorata, the Women's Association of the Addolorata, and the Confraternity of the Holy Martyrs. They are the guardians of the statues, the organizers of the processions, and the keepers of a devotion rooted in centuries of Bisceglie history.
What makes Holy Week in Bisceglie unique is the atmosphere of silence and emotion that envelops the entire city: the soft lighting, the band's funeral marches, and the slow pace of the confreres create a re-enactment charged with spirituality. For the Municipality of Bisceglie and all of Puglia, this is an intangible heritage that attracts faithful and curious visitors from across the region every year.
The 2026 edition of the Holy Week in Bisceglie reached its peak on Friday, April 3, with massive participation from the local community. The celebrations were attended by Archbishop Monsignor Leonardo D'Ascenzo and Mayor Angelantonio Angarano. The Rite of the Meeting, set up on a stage in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, drew thousands of people in an emotionally charged silence, while the evening Procession of the Mysteries traversed the historic center accompanied by the Gran Concerto Bandistico Città di Bisceglie.
Gathering and departure of the processions in Piazza Regina Margherita, concluding in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II.
The processions wind through the historic center of Bisceglie (Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, Puglia), with departures and stops at Piazza Regina Margherita, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, and the Co-Cathedral Basilica of San Pietro.
By train: the Bisceglie station is on the Bologna-Lecce Adriatic line, just a few minutes' walk from the center. By car: take the Bisceglie/Andria exit from the SS16; during Holy Week, significant traffic restrictions and road closures are expected in the city center.
The processions take place on public grounds and are free to attend. It is recommended to arrive early to witness the Rite of the Meeting and the departure of the Procession of the Mysteries.
