About Alcara Holy Week

Nestled beneath the Rocche del Crasto in the heart of the Nebrodi Park, the village of Alcara li Fusi hosts one of Sicily's most intense and authentic Holy Week celebrations. From the Via Crucis to the sacred performance of Christus "U Passiu," the moving Holy Thursday of the Apostles featuring an 18th-century papier-mâché statue group, the Good Friday Procession of the Mysteries, and the Easter Sunday "Cerca" (Search): a week of faith, tradition, and folk culture that unites the entire community.

A Holy Week that defines the Nebrodi heritage

In Alcara li Fusi, a small village in the province of Messina perched beneath the Rocche del Crasto in the Nebrodi Park, Holy Week is more than a religious appointment; it is the moment the entire community reconnects with its roots. The rites, passed down for centuries, weave together liturgy, folk theater, and devotion in an atmosphere charged with pathos that draws visitors from across Sicily.

Christus "U Passiu", the Passion brought to life in the square

The heart of the festivities is Christus "U Passiu", the sacred representation of the Passion of Christ performed on Palm Sunday. More than just a theatrical show, it is a spiritual journey retracing the final hours of Jesus' life, from his prayer in the Garden of Olives to the Crucifixion. Elaborate sets, period costumes, and local actors transform the square into an open-air stage. The event is organized by the Circolo ANSPI Castel Turio and returned in 2025 after an eleven-year hiatus to great popular acclaim.

The Holy Thursday of the Apostles, a unique Sicilian tradition

The most singular tradition is the Holy Thursday of the Apostles. In the side transept of the Mother Church, a rare late 18th-century papier-mâché statue group is displayed, depicting the Apostles gathered around the Last Supper table, with a particularly striking figure of Judas. Once carried in procession until the 1970s, the statues are now exhibited alongside local produce in a ritual that makes this display unique across the island. The setup is managed by the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament with the help of local parish youth.

Good Friday and the Procession of the Mysteries

Good Friday is the day of greatest intensity. At dawn, the melancholic sound of the Troccole (wooden clappers) replaces the church bells. In the morning, following the liturgical service and the adoration of the Cross, the Procession of the Confraternities departs from the Mother Church, featuring the veneration of a silver cross containing a relic of the True Cross. In the afternoon, the Procession of the Mysteries takes place, with statue groups reenacting the stages of Christ's Passion.

The Easter Sunday "Cerca"

The week concludes with the rite of the Cerca dell'Addolorata (Search of the Sorrowful Mother) on Easter Sunday: the Virgin, still draped in her black mourning mantle, searches the village streets for her Son until she meets the Risen Christ in the Calvario district, where she is dressed in white in a gesture of joy that dissolves the sorrow of the Passion.

Beyond faith in the Nebrodi

Visiting Alcara li Fusi during Holy Week is also an opportunity to discover a village immersed in the nature of the Nebrodi Park, a land of pastures, forests, and the golden eagles that nest on the Rocche del Crasto. It is an experience that blends spirituality, landscape, and the authentic hospitality of the Messina province.
