The Good Friday rites of Christ the Redeemer and Our Lady of Sorrows in the city of Vigร ta
In Porto Empedocle, a seaside town in the province of Agrigento, Sicilyโmade famous by Andrea Camilleri's novels as his "Vigร ta"โthe Holy Week represents the most intense moment of the religious and civic calendar. The celebrations of the Paschal Triduum begin with the solemn Santa Messa in Coena Domini (Mass of the Lord's Supper) on Holy Thursday, followed by a procession that winds through the streets of the lower town until late at night, amidst prayers, music, and laments.
The heart of the rites is Good Friday. The morning opens with the procession of the Christ the Redeemer statue, which moves from the Mother Church until the moment of the "Encounter": here, the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, kept in the Church of Santa Croce, reaches her Son to accompany him to the Calvary. The two statues proceed together along Via Roma towards the Mother Church, where the effigy of the Redeemer is replaced by that of the scourged Christ.
The body of the Lord is led to the square for the Crucifixion, amidst the weeping of the faithful in an atmosphere of profound contemplation. In the late afternoon, the Deposition takes place: the dead Christ, taken down from the cross and laid in a precious glass urn, is carried through the streets of Porto Empedocle.
The celebration concludes late in the evening, when Our Lady of Sorrows makes her sorrowful return to her Church of Santa Croce, awaiting the Resurrection. It is a rite that blends official liturgy with the emotional participation of the entire community, remaining one of the most attended events in the entire Agrigento area.
For the Municipality of Porto Empedocle, Holy Week is not just a moment of faith, but a fundamental pillar of local identity, capable of drawing devotees, returning emigrants, and visitors alike. The dates follow the liturgical calendar: the 2026 edition took place on Good Friday, April 3rd.
In 2026, Good Friday fell on April 3rd, and Porto Empedocle celebrated its Holy Week according to tradition. In the morning, the procession of the Christ the Redeemer statue departed from the Mother Church until the Encounter with Our Lady of Sorrows; the two statues continued together along Via Roma. In the afternoon, the Crucifixion and the Deposition took place, followed by the evocative procession of the Urn with the dead Christ, accompanied by his Mother, the band playing funeral marches, and the lamenters' choir, until the return of Our Lady of Sorrows to the Church of Santa Croce.
Traditional Good Friday program: morning procession of Christ the Redeemer from the Mother Church; Encounter with Our Lady of Sorrows and walk to the Calvary; Crucifixion and the weeping of the faithful; Deposition from the cross in the late afternoon; evening procession of the Urn of the dead Christ and the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows through the city streets; final return to the Church of Santa Croce.
Porto Empedocle can be reached by car via the SS115; the nearest train station and main airport are in Agrigento and Palermo (Punta Raisi, approximately 130 km away). The processions take place in the city center, between the Mother Church, the Church of Santa Croce, and the streets of the historic core.
Admission to the rites is free and open to all. During the Good Friday processions, municipal ordinances (such as bans on alcohol sales and loud music) are often in effect to ensure a respectful atmosphere. We recommend modest attire and observing silence during the procession of the Urn.
