The most cherished festival in Rosolini, blending faith, tradition, and the memory of the miraculous 1553 discovery.
The Holy Cross Festival is the defining celebration of Rosolini, a town in the southern part of the Syracuse province in Sicily. Its origins date back to 1553, when, according to popular tradition, a cowherd found one of his oxen kneeling before a cross hidden inside a cave in the Cava di Lazzaro. From that discovery, considered miraculous, a devotion was born that still unites the entire community today. The relic is now kept in the Church of the Most Holy Crucifix, inside a gilded reliquary.
The festivities begin on May 1st with a pilgrimage to the Holy Cross hermitage: at dawn, amidst the sound of bells and blank cannon shots, the faithful walk in procession along the Via Crucis to the cave of the discovery, where Holy Mass is celebrated. Following ancient custom, the cross is transported on an ox-drawn cart, just as it was in the past. In the following days, there are meditative rosaries and Eucharistic celebrations presided over by local parish priests.
The most solemn moment is the grand evening procession of the Holy Cross statue through the city streets, accompanied by a brass band and concluded with traditional fireworks. Among the most characteristic rites is the collection of votive gifts: offerings and products are gathered along the streets and then sold at auction, an event that involves the entire population.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich popular program: in the streets adjacent to Piazza del Santissimo Crocifisso, stands are set up with typical culinary products, pizzas, traditional sweets, and live musical performances. The streets of the center, such as Via Sipione, are illuminated by artistic lights that turn Rosolini into a stage of colors for the duration of the festivities.
Organized by the Parish Community of the Most Holy Crucifix and the Mother Church in collaboration with the Confraternity of the Holy Cross, the Confraternity of the Madonna Assunta, and the Cross Bearers, the festival represents one of the most significant moments of aggregation in the Rosolini calendar, capable of weaving faith, history, and popular traditions into an event awaited by the whole city.
In 2026, the Holy Cross Festival once again enlivened Rosolini with its customary program of faith and tradition. On May 1st, the faithful went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Cross hermitage for the Via Crucis and Holy Mass, while on May 3rd, the day commemorating the discovery, the cross was carried in procession toward the cave. The festivities culminated in the grand evening procession of the statue, accompanied by the brass band, tastings of local products in the town center, and traditional fireworks.
Rosolini is located in south-eastern Sicily, in the province of Syracuse. By car, it can be reached via the SS115 road connecting Noto, Ispica, and Modica. The Rosolini train station is served by the Syracuse-Gela line. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about 90 km away.
The festivities take place in the first days of May, with the hub being the Church of the Most Holy Crucifix and the Piazza del Santissimo Crocifisso. The procession covers the main streets of the historic center.
Access to the religious and popular celebrations is free.
