The memory of the Great War at high altitude
The Historical Re-enactment of the Great War at 5 Torri, titled "Touch history with your own hands", is one of the most evocative events of the Ampezzo summer. It takes place among the trenches and positions of the open-air museum of the First World War at 5 Torri, in the territory of Cortina d'Ampezzo (province of Belluno), in the heart of the Dolomites, around the Rifugio Averau.
A day among the soldiers of a century ago
The protagonists are historical re-enactors from all over Europe, including the Welsch Tiroler Historische Vereinigung, who wear uniforms and use perfectly functioning field kitchens, rifles, and equipment. The day offers an immersive experience: stories, reconstructions, and life in high-altitude military camps bring the Dolomite front of 1915-1918 back to life.
An event open to all
The event, part of the Cortina Delicious programme, is free and requires no booking. Activities include "war coffee", a fig-based drink used in the Austro-Hungarian army, the distribution of military rations, a battle simulation, and a Holy Mass at altitude. An opportunity to combine historical memory with a hike among the most famous panoramas of the Venetian Dolomites.
Great War Re-enactment 5 Torri — edition 2026
The historical re-enactment of the Great War at the 5 Torri returns on Sunday, August 2nd, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, among the trenches of the open-air museum of the First World War in Cortina d'Ampezzo. Re-enactors from all over Europe, in uniform and with period equipment, bring back to life the daily life of soldiers: uniforms, rifles, field gun, and a functioning field kitchen. The event, free and without reservation, is part of the Cortina Delicious programme.

Sunday, August 2nd, 2026 — 5 Torri, Rifugio Averau
- 10:00 AM — Opening of the re-enactment: camp, trenches, and period positions with re-enactors in uniform
- 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM — "War coffee": a fig-based drink used in the Austro-Hungarian army
- 10:30 AM — Holy Mass at altitude
- 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM — Distribution of military rations
- 2:00 PM — Battle simulation
- until 4:00 PM — Visits, stories, and demonstrations with the functioning field kitchen

How to get there
The 5 Torri area can be reached from Cortina d'Ampezzo along the SS48 towards Passo Falzarego, by the 5 Torri chairlift (fares and times on the website). Rifugio Averau can be reached on foot from the arrival of the lifts.
